What's the most "Tin Pot" thing you've seen in the SPFL

Recommended Posts

Stenhousemuir stewards. Tinpot Hitlers who get their cheapies from telling a 10 year old girl to keep her feet off the back of an empty seat in front of her while ignoring the corporate hospitality party swigging from bottles of Buckie.

Us knocking down our south side terracing before getting planning permission for a stand, not getting planning permission, and being left with a big heap of mud behind the goals ever since.

Also the state of Motherwell’s pitch a few years ago when it was basically just mud and sand. I say Motherwell’s because it was well-publicised, but ours was as bad if not worse between 2010-12. You’d have to be insane to pay 20 odd quid to watch a team play for mid-table obscurity on a surface like that, and suitably we were getting crowds of  not much more than 2000.

The "barriers" that were put up in front of the east stand at Easter Road. Our final home game of the season after beating the filth in the SC final. Tin barriers with huge gaps between them with nothing but tape holding them together. Bringing about the chant of "what the ****ing hell is that!"

They did that during the latter stages of the QotS game as well when we were about to guarantee the Championship title (before we knew St. Mirren had stopped Falkirk). The "oooooohhh" build up to them linking the final barrier with tape and as you said; the "what the ****ing hell is that!"

Obviously everyone giving it the "oh shit lads, they've got the tape out! How we gonna get on this pitch this time?"

1. Ron Dixon installing a greyhound track at Dens

2. Sevco staying at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel the night before an away fixture at Forfar

3. A Forfar game being held up for 10 minutes while some poor lackey had to climb onto the pitchside enclosure roof to retrieve the matchball

4. Dundee signing Gary Patterson from Lochore Welfare for £1000 and a set of tracksuits

5.  Dave "Coco" Smith taking to the tannoy before every game to motivate the fans, who all hated him.

The Consultancy I worked for at the time picked the design work of the kennels etc from Bob Hind who was a Director for Dundee at the time. Architect too.

I also had the misfortune of being nominated to climb the Dens Park floodlights to carry out a structural survey in the middle of fucking winter! No health and safety in those days!

(To be fair at the time I thought this was quite splendid!)

What. A. Man.

One of the biggest egos in Scottish football history. I remember reading that he turned up for training one morning with a T-shirt that simply had ‘GAFFER’ printed on it. He also had a private regi plate on his motor which read ‘G4FF3R’ or something similar.

Amazing.

As for tin pottery - Alexander showing up for work at Gretna’s first game in the SPL after being put on gardening leave.

Central belt teams, usually the ugly sisters, complaining about the long journey to play ICT or Ross county.

Its 4hrs FFS!

No mention of the fact these teams have to do the same journey every fortnight or so, often at far more inconvenient times and seasonal weather conditions.

Usually followed not long after, without a hint of irony, with stories linking Celtic and Rangers to a move to the EPL or some Atlantic League.

The utter minter of losing to a team whose manager wasn't at the game as he'd booked his wedding for that day - A SATURDAY, IN OCTOBER

Tinpottery at its finest, from both clubs.

So did people get to watch the match sitting in a hot tub?  If so that would be a pretty excellent prize

Think it lasted 2 matches. We also had competitions to let folk watch a game from a truck cab and a crane. What a club

f**k that for the proverbial game of dominoes

That whole period was fucking mental. Dixon went from plans to build an ice rink at the old Bowbridge Works with a bridge across to a new 8000 seat stand where the Derry is just now, to going totally incommunicado for months on end in Canada, only popping up now and again to sell anyone decent that Duffy had in the team.

It has to be the marquee with seats and the portaloos at the Super Seal.

Also, the Super Seal in a game against Killie they had no ball boys down that whole side and the players had to run off behind the "stand" to get the ball themselves. That's top notch tinpot.
