A Photographic History Of Scottish Football

Recommended Posts

I find seeing the grounds that came before to be very interesting. Sadly too young to have experienced the likes of Broomfield, Brockville, Boghead etc.

While Somerset has always had an "old" feeling I can't say I've ever felt anything was unsafe. Dumbarton and East Fife's grounds are the most awful examples of "new" I've been to. Completely soulless and uninteresting to me (sorry to Dumbarton and East Fife fans).

I'm very excited for the redevelopment of the north side of the ground at Somerset and extremely happy that it will remain terraced (with some seats added behind) as that is where I tend to stand. We'll see what else is implemented down the line in the next couple of decades (if anything), but I think the plans for the North Terrace have made clear that terracing is here to stay. Hopefully any new builds (if there are any in the coming years other than Lesser Hampden) will feature terracing and allow viewing from all sides.

No offence taken, and when I reach my dotage it will be memories of Boghead I recall as opposed to our current ground.

FYI, there's a wonderful panoramic double-page picture from the 1950's in one of Steve Finan's latest book.

Rowan Alexander at his testimonial match at the start of the 95-96 season. He didn't play for us after this and was soon off to his local club, Queen of the South.

We'd had a number of testimonials in the years before this -

1986 - Jimmy Simpson (v Rangers)

1990 - John McNeil (v Rangers)

1994 - Martin Doak (v Rangers)

We also seemed to play endless pre-season friendlies against Rangers in that era too.

I told the Chairman at a Q&A session that I was sick of seeing us play Rangers, and from his reply I got the impression that he was too. The committee in charge of Rowan Alexander's game came up with a game against......Falkirk.

Our next testimonial match in 1997 for David Wylie, saw Rangers invited again.

To be fair, in May 1995 we had just finished 5th in the top flight, and missed out on Europe by a single digit number of points.

I won't mention what happened in 95/96 though as my memory appears to have deleted those files temporarily.

The match programme did mention "Premier League side Falkirk" and it did mean that for once we won a testimonial match (1-0, Rajamaki).

I'd been hoping for Brentford, the club we got him from (and they got him from St. Mirren).

The Cowshed at Cappielow in 1995, back when there was a segregation fence and away fans got a large chunk of it.

By 2000 the new chairman had done this to it, despite promising us a new all-seater Cowshed.

I used to love the derby games when both sets of fans were housed in the Cowshed.

Your ground lost so much atmosphere when it was made home only in that section.

Johan Cruyff at Love Street.

Shortly before the following conversation took place as he signed my match programme.

Johan Cruyff: Your page is wet.

Me (turning page): Can you sign there, then?

Picture comes from @NoordFey on Twitter, who has posted a few other Feyenoord photos from the era, and judging by their content, he was almost certainly involved in the punch up that took place outside Love Street after that game. 😀

2 different games back in 1980/81 and latterly 1978/79.

Good crowd in The Cowshed for both games.
