Went to a fair few parties in the function suite, which was the in place to have a party if you stayed in the vicinity at the time. I found the Shand to be fine to drink in, unlike The Rock along the road which scared the shit out of me.

Looks about as welcoming as the Arctic Bar.

I loved the Arctic Bar. Watched a fair bit of the 1978 World Cup in there. But went back to it for the first time in decades about 2 years ago and it was a sad, depressing place.
DiegoDiego 2,006 Report post Posted February 9 Tickets that were printed for league play off in 2003, weren’t required. Imagine if that came true: Rangers vs Celtic Championship play-off, loser in the seaside leagues.

Both games at the old terraced Hampden too. Agreed - two wonderful games. Mo Johnstone scoring the first in the 2-0 win v France, and McCoist scoring in the 1-1 draw with Norway that qualified us. Great days 🙂
DiegoDiego 2,006 Report post Posted February 9 Agreed - two wonderful games. Mo Johnstone scoring the first in the 2-0 win v FranceI was quite young at the time of that game and established the fact in my mind that France = shite at football. I was incredulous when they won in '98.

I was incredulous when they won in '98. They had just won Euro 84 and really unlucky to lose in the World Cup semi-final in 86. Which shows what a good result that was for us. But yes, they did lose their way for a few years after that.

Le Tout P'ti FC 1,403 Report post Posted February 9 No, it was the name of a Gillingham fanzine: I know! I probably bought a copy from Sportspages on Charing Cross Road. I just fudged the name, it hasn't been a prominent memory for the past 30 years, but it was lurking in there somewhere.

His knowledge of Scottish football was good and he came across as a very likeable character. Bizarrely Sir Trevor McDonald was on the same tour.

Both games at the old terraced Hampden too. What a night. Paul McStay was magnificent in that game too. Anyone remember the weird phenomenon that the press called "the Hampden Howl" ? A weird, high pitched noise the crowd made. I dont think it ever happened again. Maybe it put the French off?
Dunfermline Don 443 Report post Posted February 10 I know! I probably bought a copy from Sportspages on Charing Cross Road. I just fudged the name, it hasn't been a prominent memory for the past 30 years, but it was lurking in there somewhere. Sportspages used to be a must go shop when living in the Smoke in pre-internet days. I used to buy most of the Scottish fanzines that they had back in the late 80s. I am sure some of them are still in boxes in my folks attic. I wonder if they are worth anything now?
