I've a vague memory of attending one of these in the 70s at Fir Park. Maybe against League of Ireland?

ETA: The League Select was managed by Jim McLean

Fantastic find, thanks. That programme brings back memories.

Look at our lineup though. Should have hoovered them.

Any record of Gregor Stevens being sent off/ending someone's career? 😉

Re-reading the 1990 Centenary match programme for the first time in years no prizes for guessing photos of players from which two teams featured the most...

There are features on Willie Miller and Gordon Smith (of Hibs Famous Five) and grudging mentions of Hearts and Dundee United.

As for the rest of the League- f*ck off.

Sad thing is if a programme was to be produced for a similar match today it wouldn't be any different.

Celtic Park in 1960.

75% of the ground is uncovered. The Main Stand roof doesn't cover the enclosure, the Jungle has yet to receive its double pitched roof and the East terrace is completely exposed.

Image may contain: stadium, sky and outdoor

Celtic were also fairly late in installing floodlights compared to other top division teams- not until 1959 which was 4 years after Hibs and 2 years after Hearts. I don't think the Board were convinced of their worth.

Scottish League:

Games was played Saturday 18th August 1990 - week before league began. Scottish League won 1-0. Crowd was only 15,085 which is a bit surprising given the talent on display, and it basically being the full Scotland national team. Clubs were supposed to play friendlies on the Friday (when Rangers visited Morton) or Sunday (when Celtic hosted Everton) so no obvious explanation for the very poor turn-out.

Over the course of October and early November the B&Q Centenary Cup was contested which became the Challenge Cup in subsequent seasons.

These are the respective shirts. Somewhat incongruously Scotland played in red and Scottish League in blue:

There was a poor turnout IIRC because playing a Scotland v Scottish League match was criticized as being a cheap way of celebrating the League Centenary.

It was unfavourably compared to the English League Centenary match a few years before which had featured players like Maradona, Platini, Futre, Stojkovic, Josimar and Belanov. (Richard Gough and John McClelland were in the Football League squad)

There may have been a World Cup hangover too- did you want to spend money watching a Scotland team who'd lost to Costa Rica..

Anyway I was one of the 15,000...

Fair point.

Steve Clarke and Pat Nevin were unused subs in that "Mercantile Credit Centenary Classic". It drew a more respectable 61,000.

Game is on YouTube (sadly Scotland v Scottish League isn't). If you don't want to watch the match the opening few minutes are the players being announced and running out in turn. It was some team:

For reasons unknown Hibs played an Irish League select in a friendly in 1989.

I was there-I don't remember it being a great match.

Two things:

1) Meadowbank Thistle keeper Jim McQueen guested for Hibs as Andy Goram was on international duty and Chris Reid was injured

2) George O'Boyle, later of Dunfermline and Saint Johnstone, was in the Irish League select

There was an Inter League Championship (for the "British Empire Trophy"), equivalent to the Home Nations Championship... It was contested by the Football League, Scottish League, Irish League and League of Ireland. It was played annually until 1961-62 and then biannually until 1971-72. Unsurprisingly the Football League won almost two-thirds, with the Scottish League winning most of the rest. Before the Great War the Southern League participated. In the early 1950s the Welsh League played in a number of matches but never joined the championship. During the 1950s the Irish League also played an annual challenge match against Western Command.

First-ever inter-league international was Football League v Scottish in Bolton in April 1892. Scottish League had only been formed the previous season.

Usually the Irish leagues met home-n-away each season (in Dublin on St Patrick's Day then in Belfast on Easter Monday)... After it went biannual the Football League and Scottish League continued to meet annually as it still got decent crowds. They forced the tournament to go biannual from 1962 to free-up dates for more glamorous opponents (like the Italian League and Belgian League).

Games against the Italian League were especially popular as players like John Charles, Gerry Hitchens and Denis Law had moved to Italian clubs then were being picked for their league select. There were 68,000 at Hampden for Scottish League 1-1 Italian League in November 1961 and this was regarded as a big disappointment... 100,000 were expected, but there was torrential rain. Record attendance for an inter-league match was 90,000 at Scottish League v Football League at Ibrox in 1949... and it was on a Wednesday afternoon!

There was also an annual Scotland v Scottish League game from 1958 to 1965. It acted as a trial match to help decide who should be picked for the home and inter-league internationals.

There were also one-off inter-league matches for commemorative occasions and against special opponents like Staevnet (aka Copenhagen XI), Hesse, the USA and Australia.

Scottish League v Football League was last played in 1976. Since then there have been games not involving top-tier players from time to time. However the only games involving true best were Glasgow  v Football League in 1977 (for HM Queen's Silver Jubilee); Football League v Rest of the World in 1988 (for the Football League centenary); then Scotland v Scottish League in 1990 (for the Scottish League centenary).

As usual, HibeeJibee puts flesh on the bones.

That was the last-ever Scottish League v Football League game. I've got an almost complete set of inter-league programmes... some of them are more artistic than others. Here's a few of the better ones in the SFL v FL series, from searching online.

Impressive! That'll be worth a pound or two.

Mark Lawrenson seems to be tackling Stalin with a zombie Kevin Keegan watching.

By the same artist. Derek Whiteford and Kenny Dalglish run away laughing after having done something terrible to Peter Latchford. Willie McCulloch looks on shocked. Willie was the last player to wear a monocle...and have an aeroplane drawn on his shorts...probably for luck.b5df2db1d5299e559eb56b91b1f83d76.jpg

Australia and Scotland have met 8 times, 5 full internationals plus 3 games as part of the 1967:Scotland XI world tour. Australia has never played a game against the Scottish League.

I was talking about inter-league games in general. Australia played the League of Ireland in Dublin in 1970 while on tour. (They played Luton on Mon, Man City on Wed and LofI on Fri).

Did he not play for the Football League, too? As did Dave MacKay?

Denis Law, Dave Mackay, John White, Bob Wilson and others all played for the Football League, yep.

Against the Irish League in 1960 the Football League fielded 3 Scots (Law, Mackay, White)... 2 Northern Irish (Blanchflower, McIlroy)... 1 Welsh (Cliff Jones)... 1 West German (Trautman)!

Law never played for the Football League against the Scottish League, but he did represent both Scotland and the Italian League against the Scottish League.

Aye, you can pick a lot up for buttons (Footbal League and 1960s/1970s particularly) - but some of the others only come up pretty rarely (especially the Irish). There are around 200 and I'm only missing about 10... mainly 1940s and LofI v IL games. Some have never come-up; others have but for silly money.

After the regular inter-league games stopped both Irish leagues kept up occasional games against each other and British clubs. It might have been a warm-up as Irish League played the League of Ireland and undertook 4-game tour of America at the end of the season (including games v Ruch Chorzow and US national team!).
