Andrews lost a ropey goal out in Hungary a week or two later and that was him done at Celtic, his confidence was totally shot and I think that game away to Honved was his last for Celtic. Packie Bonner was still out injured so we signed Alan Rough on a short term deal who did quite well in the ten or so games he played. Unusually for the time, I think Roughie was Celtic's only Scottish goalie during the 1980s.

EDIT: We did play Eire... home-n-away friendlies in early 1950s, in FA Centenary Cup in 1963 and home-n-away UEFA Amateur Cup qualifiers in 1966. You'll be amazed to discover both home games were at Parkhead. Edited February 27, 2022 by HibeeJibee

Parlane's penalty gave them the lead which was doubled by Robinson and rounded-off by Pearson. Wednesday 24th February 1965 Intermediate international Scotland U23 0-0 England U23 at Pittodrie, Aberdeen 26,000 Scotland's upcoming talents drew a blank against their southern rivals before a big crowd in the granite city. On the same day American forces began the aerial bombardment of North Vietnam - ground forces were deployed 11 days later - which was to rapidly escalate and last almost 4 years. My dad took me to this game. My memories of it aren’t great, but I do remember midfield battles between Billy Bremner and Alan Ball.
House Bartender
A couple of years back I posted a pic of a Prisoner-of-War Scottish International side from WWII. https://www.pieandbovril.com/forum/index.php?/topic/249681-a-photographic-history-of-scottish-football/page/248/#comment-13453377 Here's a bit more from those years and those men incarcerated - for many this was over 5 years. In Stalag 344, Lamsdorf, they ran an in-house newssheet/magazine - The Clarion -which reported both in-camp competitions and stories about matches 'back home'. Typically the use of "England" is used in error for the whole UK&NI which is beyond annoying. As is "Soccer". Scotland do get the odd mention, and there are some names you will recognise (Shankly & Matthews of the RAF). There was formal referee training in camp too, for FA standard qualification.

Saturday 22nd February 1958 Amateur Home Nations Scotland Amateurs 1-3 Northern Ireland Amateurs at Broomfield Park, Airdrie Deepest darkest Lanarkshire was the venue for this amateur international. (Any locals who stayed home rather than travel to East Fife likely regretted it - as Airdrie scored 6 without reply). Scotland's team comprised a motley collection of 2 players from the Football League (both QPR)... 4 from the Scottish League (Airdrieonians, Clyde, Queen's Park, Third Lanark)... 3 from the Athenian League (pair at Hounslow and another from Hitchin)... somebody from Jordanhill Training College... and a 'keeper from Wormit Amateur. In contrast the Irishmen's entire XI hailed from the Irish League and this experience told as they look the lead shortly before HT, were pegged-back by McDonald with 10mins left, but scored twice more for an impressive victory. With an injection of reinforcements from Glasgow Uni, Spartans and Queen's Park the Scots actually managed to beat Wales, then defeat England at Wembley: ultimately the championship ended in a 3-way tie. Thanks for this. My uncle is the 16yo. Number 10 just about to sign for Clyde.
HibeeJibee
74 years ago today... Saturday 28th February 1948 Amateur representative match England Amateurs 4-0 Queen's Park at Fratton Park, Portsmouth 15,000 Preparations for the Olympic Games football tournament of 1948 in London started on the south coast with the English amateurs, bolstered by Frank Donovan the Welsh amateur international, sweeping aside crack Scottish outfit Queen's Park. If the nature of the visiting team seems odd, it should be appreciated there was no Scottish amateur side until 1949. With a fine crowd filling about one-third of Portsmouth's ground, the hosts put 4 by the Hampden men without reply. It could have been worse - Ronnie Simpson was considered man-of-the-match. Donovan, plus 7 of the English, ultimately made the squad alongside 5 of the Spiders. It was an interesting day domestically... Queen of the South won 3-2 at Rangers, despite their outside right being arrested inside Ibrox before kickoff (he was AWOL from King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry); while local businessmen offered £20 a man 'unofficial bonuses' if Montrose beat Celtic (they didn't). Andy Roxburgh of East Stirlingshire - later Scotland manager - and O'Rourke of Hendon were only non-Queen's Parkers. Saints goalie was Dick Beattie who was named a few months later as a participant in the English match betting scandal from earlier in the 60’s. Hat trick for Alan Gilzean, his second last one for Dundee.

HibeeJibee
62 years ago today... Wednesday 2nd March 1960 Intermediate international Scotland U23 4-4 England U23 at Ibrox, Glasgow 25,000 Fans enjoyed fantastic entertainment as Scotland and England shared 8 goals at Ibrox. It really should have been a comfortable home win as the Scots led 3-0 on 42mins then 4-1 on 54mins - but a fantastic rally from the visitors saw them share the plaudits. Ian St John's double bookended a strike from Cousin and Mackay's penalty. Jimmy Greaves scored a hat-trick, which gave Eastham the chance to equalise on 76mins. Others in the English camp who went on to win WC 1966 were Bobby Charlton and George Cohen. Couple of points to note. Scotland had more players involved from Motherwell or Dundee than from Rangers or Celtic. Hearts had players involved on both sides - Gordon Marshall keeping goal for England spent 7 years at Tynecastle before joining Newcastle, and is a rare example of somebody being capped for an England team while playing with a Scottish club.
