It occurs to me that Billy Steel went on to play for Great Britain again later that season: the famous 'Match of the Century' at Hampden on Saturday 10th May 1947. It finished Great Britain 6-1 Rest of Europe in front of 137,000 and he scored. Then got sold to Derby County for a world record fee.

Not a 100% certain but I think it may have been a world record fee that brought him to Dens a few years later, certainly a British record at the time. Money well spent by the Dundee board as there was a huge increase in attendances as well as 2 League Cup victories. Best player ever for Dundee according to my auld man and most of his peers

Century (100) of football in Russia celebration match, and some anniversary for Moscow too (850).

Bobby Robson had something to do with the game.

If you hold cyrillic script upside down, you can sometimes partly decipher Russian text.

clapping-leonardo-dicaprio.gif

Centenary of the Russian Football Union coinciding with Moscow celebrating its 850th birthday. Russia 0-2 Rest of the World. Andrei Kanchelskis started for hosts.

Strong team for the World including Zubizarreta, Vega, Verlaat, Matthaus, Djorkaeff, Guerrero, Effenberg, Winter, Papin and Shevchenko.

According to RSSSF co-managers for the World were Bobby Robson and Bora Milutinovic.

Not speaking Russian it's impenetrable to me but the programme teamlines page has a photo of Graham Taylor as the World manager. Maybe he dropped-out... maybe an error...

It was certainly a British record fee, and I'd like to think it was a world record too!

George Anderson took him to Dens, usurping other more likely suitors  as he'd built up a friendship with Billy Steel during the war.

Steel had the imaginative nickname Budgem at Dens, while manager Anderson was known as Toffee Dod. Much better monikers than many of today's players who are more likely to have a  'zza' added to a variation of their proper name as a term of endearment, as in Dazza or Bazza.

That's something that came up the road from England. I first remember encountering it in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, so early to mid 80's.

Guess nobody will get this... All-Ireland 3-5 England to close An Tostal festival (Eire's answer to Festival of Britain). Peacock and Tully of Celtic played for All-Ireland. Similar match opened it 1yr earlier.

You couldn't have staged a game like that 10-15yrs later.

Forgot about these.

Given the date I'll say the 75th anniversary of the IFA?

clapping-leonardo-dicaprio.gif

75th anniversary of the Irish Football Association. Sign of how badly British football was now regressing compared to the continent - it finished United Kingdom 1-4 Europe in constrast to 6-1 win only 8yrs earlier. In the preceding 2yrs the Hungararians beat Scotland by 4-2 and 3-1, and famously England by 6-3 and 7-1... while both had also bombed at World Cups.

Joe McDonald, Bobby Johnstone and Billy Liddell played - although interestingly all of them were with English clubs by that point. Johnstone opened the scoring for UK but it was pegged back within 2mins, then the roof fell in during last quarter of an hour. Buffon and Kopa probably biggest names for Europe - only Ocwirk of Austria and Vukas of Yugoslavia returned from team which (billed as "Rest of the World") drew 4-4 with England in 1953 to celebrate the FA's own 90th anniversary.

Encouraged by @Lurkst and his response, and following the 'anniversary theme', this was probably the 75th Anniversary of the Danish FA: I'm unsure if the '75' on the programme has been hidden, or if it's in a different colour which the photograph hasn't clearly picked up.

The match is Scandinavia (Norden) v the 'others' of Europe, which in that game included Denis Law and Jim Baxter in a strong lineup.

75th anniversary of the Danish Football Union. (I've doctored some of the covers to remove obvious clues but post the undoctored image once somebody gets it right).

Scandinavia 2-4 Rest of Europe. Jim Baxter and Denis Law (who scored) both started - and Alex Hamilton came on just after HT.Other starters were Ray Wilson, Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, van Himst, Augusto, Bomba, Popluhar, Voronin and the great Lev Yashin. Tilkowskie and the great Eusebio the other subs.

Can't speak Danish but programme suggests a 4th Scot - Willie Henderson - plus Czech duo Gelata and Masopust were no-shows.

Carl Bertelsen and Jens Petersen for Scandinavians joined Morton and Aberdeen respectively shortly after the game. Roald Jensen joined Hearts the next year.

I've no recollection of that game at all. Found a heavily watermarked image of Durie in action though...

Celebration Match ahead of the World Cup 1998 finals draw - at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. It ended Europe 2-5 Rest of the World as a masterclass from not-yet-fat Ronaldo and Batistuta blew away the Europeans who trailed 1-5 at HT. Each finalist sent 1 player but to make it 16 each (and avoid a diplomatic incident having US-Iran on same side) Europe's squad had the Iranian.

Gary McAlister was due to represent Scotland, but got injured on weekend before the game. Gordon Durie ultimately went. Indicating the confusion he actually got announced to the crowd as "Darren Jackson" 😮.

Europe - manager Franz Beckenbauer
Kopke
Pfeifenberger, Costacurta, Hierro, Lemoine
Ince, Zidane, Balakov
Lacatus, Kluivert, Boksic

Subs: Grodas, Durie, Colding, Jokanovic, Pashazadeh

Rest of the World - manager Carlos Alberto Parreira
Songo'o
Hong, Margas, Naybet, Nyathi
Sellimi, Nakata, Bernal
de Avila, Ronaldo, Batistuta

Subs: Ruiz Diaz, Wynalda, Burton, Sulimani, Kanu

(It appears Pashazadeh of Iran wasn't used; neither was Kanu of Nigeria who got injured pre-match).

To my knowledge Gordon Durie remains the last Scot to play for Europe. (Paul Lambert was the last to play for the Rest of the World... in the Turkish FA's 75th anniversary game the next year).

It was a classic match. Searching in Youtube finds various highlights, but entire game as broadcast live is here. Your odd couple in Eurosport commentary Archie McPherson and Ray Clemence:

You will note the notorious attempt 60 years ago by Rangers to boot out a team (Stranraer) that were older than them from the League plus others.

Nothing changes but at least Berwick got their revenge a few years later.

And talking of closed shops, note how the Football League rejected 8 applications to join because the clubs had signed players from League clubs.

For the sake of completeness, all four League clubs seeking re-election were re-elected.  York, Southport, Barrow, and Hartlepool(s).  And two years ago not one of those was in the League.  The best of the failures was Wigan Athletic - 31 votes behind Pools.

Note also that having finished in a dead heat Hibs and Dunfermline are having to play-off at Tynecastle to decide who finished 2nd in their Summer Cup group. This shouldn't have mattered (as only group winners progressed); but with Hearts committed to touring North America, whoever finished behind them would progress.

People complain about too many games nowadays, but it was eyewatering in mid-1960s... 6x League Cup group games to open season + 34x league games + 6x Summer Cup group games to close season = 46 games, without any knockout ties. League Cup QF = 2-legged... Summer Cup SF + Final = 2-legged... local cups still important... unlimited replays in all cups... 3rd game playoffs in Europe as no away goals... 2x league internationals... plus "one-off showpieces" e.g. Glasgow+Edinburgh selects/anniversaries/Scotland v SFL/etc.

And the First Choice players would play the majority of those games.

There was no "Squad Rotation" in those days.

As their info is easily accessible online I just had a look at Hearts that season (1963-64).

Even a relatively disappointing campaign... 4th in league, exited Scottish Cup in Last 32, exited League Cup in groupstage, exited Fairs Cup in opening round... involved:
* 34x league games
* 3x European games (went to replay against Lausanne)
* 6x International Soccer League group games
* 3x Scottish Cup ties (went to replay against Motherwell)
* 6x League Cup group games
* 6x Summer Cup group games (qualified for SFs but withdrew due to North American tour)
* 2x East of Scotland Shield ties
* 1x Edinburgh Charity Cup tie
* 1 x Stamford Bridge Trophy match (annual friendly v Chelsea)

= 62 games (plus a couple of routine friendlies)

They only used about 20 players and only 14 of those featured in more than 10 games.

Cruickshank played twice for Scotland... v SFL and friendly v West Germany (missing a Summer Cup derby defeat v Hibs the following night)... and twice for Scotland U23s.

He also featured in John White's tribute game at Spurs after he was killed by lightening.

Holt and Tommy White played once for Scotland v SFL. Shevlane played once for SFL and thrice for Scotland U23s. Sharp played once for Scotland Amateurs.
