Was the final at Wembley that year? Must have been a sore one for Celtic to miss out on. Would have been strong favourites for it.

Pretty sure that the Ajax tie was only a quarter final. They were knocked out by Inter Milan the next year at the semi-final stage though, courtesy of a Dixie Deans penalty that is still in earth orbit.

I remember.

It would have been mad if Rangers and Celtic both made Euro finals in the same year twice in 5 years.

Is that Graeme Sharp 3 to the left of Gallagher?

Yes it is. Our highest ever transfer fee, £125,000 from Everton. It's incredible to think of the fees paid back then. That would be nearly £600,000 in today's money.

Allegedly one of the design specifications for the Maracana was that it should have a greater capacity than Hampden for the very reason that they knew it would attain world record crowds.

Sadly they wouldn't see Scotland's finest gracing their turf.  OK, they'd not have visits from the Ugly Sisters  - so that's a plus.

As well as the Brazilian 150th Cup game 1972 already mentioned... Brazil 1-0 Scotland in 1972... Hibs have also played at the Maracana: Copa Rio in 1953. Lost to Botafogo and Fluminense, drew with Vasco da Gama. As you can see vast crowds saw "Hibs teach Brazil to play football", as the old chestnut has it:
