Unusual to see a football player in full gear standing outside a ground, posing for a photograph on what appears to be a matchday. This is Willie Japp, while an Ayr United player in the 1950s.

If it's Somerset he might actually be inside the ground ;)

Looks like he's wearing a kilt!

And hardly anybody turned up for the final

Thé 4 highest scorers from the top flight and 4 highest scorers from the second tier format would see Morton and Dunfermline in this season’s tournament

there might not have been much of a crowd but the fighting was wild.the two teams played again the following week at love st and the hostilities continued.the dons took the honours at hampden but got their arses well and truly kicked around the streets of paisley as they made their way back to their buses.

The question on a quiz on today’s BBC Scotland Football website says that this photo of Pittodrie is from the 1990’s! The Main Stand Enclosure was seated in 1968 and the roof of the Main Stand was changed in February 1971 after the fire. So photo taken between these dates.

Pittodrie was famously all seated by the early 80s so the BBC's quizmaster must be relatively young.

Sometime in the 70s, exact date and opponents unknown.

From a careful analysis of the clothes (trouser width especially) and haircuts (quite a few administered by mothers), I'm going for a Saturday afternoon in March 1976.

Narrows it down. Unlike the strides on display.

Same article has bit about Billy Semple. “Billy Semple signing for Dundee?

After nearly nine years at Rangers, winger Semple (26) was freed in April 1972 after playing just a handful of first-team games.

To be fair, competition at the time for wing berths came in the shape of Willie Henderson, Willie Johnston, Davie Wilson and Tommy McLean.

He then had a brief spell with Durban United in South Africa before Davie White, his former boss at Ibrox, took him to Dens Park.

In his 18 months as a Dark Blue, he made just five starts for the first team, and listed as a substitute 14 times.”

Am I imagining things? When the Record had their version of page 3 girls was Mrs Semple featured?

IMG_0952.JPG Dundee FC in 1973. Back row (from left) – Cairney, Robinson, McPhail, Wylie, McKenzie, Stewart, McGuigan, Robertson. Middle row – Wilson, Johnstone, Hendrie, Anderson, Hewitt, Allan, Knowles, Caldwell, Grimmond, Mackie, Pringle. Front row – Harry Davis (Coach), Semple, Watson, Wallace, Gray, Gemmell, Scott, Lambie, Strachan, Smith, and Physiotherapist Eric Ferguson.

I'm not disputing its '73 but John Duncan, Iain Phillip, Bobby Robinson and Jimmy Wilson must have been on their summer holidays still

Interesting sub-thread opportunity: photos of grounds with adverts for defunct bevvy brands.

Lanliq and El D always had ads in the football pages of the papers, but cant remember them at grounds.

Used to have ads in some of the programmes, too. THird Lanark springs to mind.

No wonder the Queen's support crashed in the late 1950s - many had drunk themselves to death and most survivors were too pished to find the stadium - from a 1949 match programme v Dunfermline -
