Scotland got Brazil, USSR and New Zealand and went out.

Northern Ireland got Spain, Honduras and Yugoslavia and went into the second knock out phase where they were knocked out.

England got France, Czechoslovakia and Kuwait and, like NI went to the second group phase and were eliminated there.

Bizzare format for the 78 and 82 World Cups, top two from each group went into a second group phase, four groups of three where each group winner went into the semi finals.

The 78 World Cup had no semi finals.

There were two groups of four in the second phase.  The winners of each contested the final.

My bad, I remember reading it had a second group phase but, the 82 world cup is the first one I'm old enough to remember watching, albeit very vaguely as I was six.

1978 was my first one really.  I genuinely think it caused some scars.

1974 had the same format as 78, but although I was around, I don't remember it.

Willie Miller has a go at the Aberdeen fans after Paul McStay is felled by a coin following Roy Aitken scoring a penalty at the Merkland Road end of Pittodrie in April 1985.

False flag operation if you ask me. I mean Aberdonians throwing coins away...?!

Brilliant picture. I always struggle to imagine houses being there given it's so open with the car park there now, must have been incredibly tight when there was a big fixture on.

You might find out soon enough. As far as I'm aware there's a planning application in for housing on the car park and on the site of the old railway depot behind the ground.

Morton , of course. 2-1 at Cappielow with a last minute winner

The only time that I can remember being at Cappielow and seeing Aberdeen win was a Scottish Cup Quarter Final replay in March 1978. Even then, because of train problems I only saw the last 15 minutes.

I was at the first game at Pittodrie. We were 2-nil up and cruising with about two minutes to go , but ended up drawing 2-2. McGhee scored one of their goals I think. Apart fae Andy Ritchie , the thing I remember most about Morton fae that era is Jim Tolmie’s mental hair.

I remember Andy Ritchie and the shipyards beside Capplielow.

Jimmy Johnstone in action in what looks like a pre season friendly in a junior/amateur ground. I’m sure someone will know the details.

Look at the physique of that defender! You can understand how they might just have underestimated Celtic - with wee Jimmy Johnstone, podgy Bobby Murdoch and bandy Bobby Lennox

Exactly, so much so that Inter thought they could  play an arm-less goalkeeper....
