The finest photograph in the history of Scottish football. Ian McCall strides across the pitch to applaud the travelling support after a 1-1 draw between St Mirren and Ayr United at St Mirren Park. So much to unpack here...
- The ruffian mother balancing her toddler in one hand and flipping McCall off with the other.
- Humpty Dumpty guffawing in McCall's direction, gently caressing his gut.
- Ross Kemp suffering a Head's Gone and performing a 'Hawd Me Back' routine with the advertising board.
- Ryan Stevenson balancing his own toddler on his forearm like a waiter in order to remind McCall that the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Remind me, what was the St Mirren fans beef with McCall?

Any bud know if the guy in the middle at the front called Patterson  ?

It might seem like a sparse crowd for a final - the attendance was recorded as 28,294. A couple of reasons as to why this might have been are that in addition to a miners strike going on at the time, the final was dubbed the boycott final as the SFA raised the admission price from 1 shilling to 2 shillings. Unsure why it was held at Celtic Park instead of Hampden, perhaps the SFA didn't want the huge Hampden terraces to seem sparse so held it at a stadium with a smaller capacity.
From partickthistlehistory, here's the match report by Willie Maley:
GW1187H1933&key=b8483a6f3abdaf6a634e04ef1b99769a734cd7835a522f8b06660e74efa01ad9
Remarkably low crowd indeed for the final especially considering the crowds at the semi finals and replays. Rangers v Albion Rovers had a crowd of 65,000 at Celtic Park. The other semi between Partick Thistle and Hearts went to three games, all played at Ibrox, watched by crowds of 63,700, 21,000 and 40,000. So combined crowd for four semis of not far off 190,000.

To further compound the mystery the previous years final between Kilmarnock and Albion Rovers had a crowd of 95,000. For further comparison the final in 1922 between Rangers and Morton had a crowd of 75,000. So big crowds were the norm it would seem except for that final alone.

The boycott really must have worked then. One of my colleagues at work is a Jag and he told me his Dad, as a boy, begged his Dad to be taken to the game but didn't get to see Thistle win the cup because his Dad's Dad was in support of the boycott. He never said if his Dad got to see the 1971 League Cup win, I hope he did after missing out on a final. I know for some people missing a big game when your team is involved can't be helped, but I'd absolutely hate to miss a final when my team won.

I never knew Albion Rovers held such prominence at one point.

Here's a picture of Ayr giving Killie a guard of honour apparently.

Sorry, not a photo*

*Not sorry 😉

I was at that game and Best was different class from everyone else on the pitch.

The tannoy played Auld Lang Syne (Go home ya h*ns) at the end of the game - made it even better.

Frightening that is 40 years ago

Davie Miller, Hugh McCann, Sandy Thomson, Frank Liddell, Euan Stewart, Brian McGarry. Front row – Billy Morrison, Donny Wilson, Rab Russell, Gordon Forrest, Billy Williamson.

This is the Alloa team pictured before their 25th December game against Cowdenbeath in 1976, the last time Christmas Day football matches were played in Scotland. Alloa kicked off at the Recs at 11 am before a crowd of 731 and won 2-1.

Clydebank played St Mirren the same day before 7,500 which must have been a squeeze at Kilbowie...

The Bankies archive states the attendance as 7675.

The Herald feature in 2014 reckons the attendance was officially 10,000, but likely to have been higher.

Clydebank home attendances that season were around 1500-4000 depending on opposition.

Had no idea Celtic fans could be friendly with Fat Sally.
