A quick check shows he went to rugby playing George Watson's, captained Scottish Schoolboys at rugby while also playing football for Hutchy Vale Boys Club. Turned pro with Hearts and had one first team appearance before leaving. Went back to rugby, got 27 caps and scored the winning try v England when Scotland won the 1984 Grand Slam.  At the same time studied for a law degree and became a solicitor.  His wife will obviously be a stunner.  I hate him.

Superb. When was the last time you saw a player dishing out a proper punch in a game.

Indeed. The whole moment is caught in that one shot - you know there’s no way he’s missing the target with that backswing.

Last couple of games  on Christmas Day were 1976. Last full programme 1971.

Coincidentally, the 1966 Christmas Day game I was at was also v Hibs.

Those were of course occasions when Christmas Day fell on a Saturday and as late as 1971 no-one saw any reason not to play. By the time it came around again in 1976 most clubs moved the games to other days (generally the holiday Monday) and the next time in 1982 the games weren't scheduled on Christmas Day in the first place. On that occasion and in 1999, 2004 and 2010 the holiday Monday was used and in 1993 it was simply a blank weekend. It won't fall on a Saturday again until 2021.

You have recently started to see the same happening with Christmas Eve - in the lower divisions in 1994, 2005 and 2011 they played on the holiday Monday instead. SPFL went with a full card in 2016 but two-thirds of the Premiership games and one-third of lower league games were moved by the clubs. Looking ahead it may soon be as equally "taboo" to play on Christmas Eve as it has become to play on Christmas Day.

Hibs v Ayr was moved to the Friday night back in 1976 and became the last Christmas Eve game here outwith a weekend.

This is of course a societal 'Anglicisation' as traditionally Christmas Day wasn't observed in Scotland - reflecting our Presbyterian heritage - and New Year was the big day with all the derbies, not Boxing Day. Due to the winter break the traditional New Year games have recently been eroded up here - perhaps fatally - and with no lower league games either this season there will be no New Year's Day football in Scotland whatsoever, AFAICS, which must be almost unheard of throughout history (Sundays excepted).

Playing on weekday Christmas Days - after it had become widely observed enough as a holiday to get a crowd - was always a rare occurrence here. I think the last example was in 1973 when a postponed Scottish Cup tie East Stirlingshire v Clydebank was tried again at Firs Park on Christmas Eve (a Monday) and the poor beggars drew 0-0 and had to replay the next day before their turkey dinners.

Exception is Third Lanark v Dundee which was traditionally played on Christmas Day for reasons unknown - speculation has even implicated the Jews.

Annoyingly there are Boxing Day games, for the Premiership teams. No reason why us lower league teams couldn't have them. Everyone loves a game on Boxing Day.
