A Photographic History Of Scottish Football

Seemed to be the standard way of doing things. Presumably because the away team were the selling point in local posters, programmes etc at a time when attendances were more variable. See also this poster advertising a game at Muirton against Third Lanark

Certainly had changed by the 1970s.

That photo must be pre-1934.

Real Madrid asked for the friendly as preparation for the upcoming Cup Winner's Cup Final against Chelsea to give them a flavour of British opposition.

Aye they were impressed with that Saints team and requested the friendly. By all accounts it was a cracking footballing side who'd done well in the Scottish league and had qualified for Europe.

Records show they play on March 11th 1929. No other March date comes as close to the poster as that, so assume it's an error on the records part.

It's 1955 – the date exactly matches the fixture that year v Thirds (we lost 3-1 in front of 3,500 – how  little things change). The other clue is that there was an election that year, which accounts for political poster* and its complaint about lack of action on the Forth Road Bridge and the Tay Road Bridge, both issues in the 1950s (not so in the 1920s – even the Kincardine Bridge hadn't been built then). Errol Airfield, built in 1939, had been abandoned by the War Ministry after the war. The big political argument in the late 1940s and early 1950s was the continuation of an air service.

Finally, it couldn't have been 1929. Not only were we in the top league then, but the A/B Division setup mentioned in the poster only existed between 1946 and 1956.

* Can't fully explain the 'National Party' bit of the poster, as the National Party merged with SNP in the 1930s, but assume it was local shorthand for the SNP.

Ah, yes. The Sporting Post. The finest football publication the game has ever known.  Saturday nights were never the same if you couldn't get your hands on one, misprints and all. Sadly missed. RIP.

They're fairly unsung, they're one of the less objectionable clubs and their soup isn't too bad so while Mo fans get rat arsed tonight here is John Sheran with the Division 2 trophy 34 years ago:

Sure that's my old mate Mark Bennett beside him, great sweeper in his day

Roy Aitken holds up the league trophy won in Celtic's centenary season in 1988 and, is part of the side parading the 1977 Scottish Cup, next to Alfie 'he used to be a *** but he's alright now' Conn.

Couple of pictures again I saw on the brilliant Celti Wiki website, do any other Scottish clubs have an equivalent site with an extensive history of match reports and pictures?   Im a bit of a football nostalgia geek and love all that stuff.

Not match reports but pictures of every programme issued for a match involving Saints (including lineups, scorers and attendances) at
