The Ghana fans were noisy, colourful and anarchic- one guy ran up and down the front of the main stand waving a Ghana flag and taunting the Korean fans. The Koreans were mostly over in the old East stand- they applauded politely in unison. Essien was the best player on the pitch. There's a chapter about him in the book Dundee Greats, some of the stories are excellent, including one where his team mates pulled him out of a pub, totally a couple of hours before another game against Aberdeen, one of the players was Doug Cowie who said something like "Honestly, he was half-gassed and tore Aberdeen apart that day". Dundee's next successful period was the early 60s, winning the title in 61-62, a season which included a bizarre 5-1 win at Ibrox, and a mental comeback against Raith Rovers, with Dundee winning 5-4, after trailing 4-2 with 15 minutes to go. Alan Gilzean's goals were instrumental, few more than this late winner at Tannadice in April 1962. Dundee qualified for the European Cup, making the semi-finals before being fucked out 5-2 by AC Milan over 2 legs. They were drawn against one of the favourites in the first round, FC Cologne. Dundee thumped them 8-1 at Dens in one of the biggest shocks in the competition's short history. The return leg was a deeply unpleasant affair, marred by crowd violence and the Cologne players targeting Dundee 'keeper Bert Slater, who had to go off with concussion, having to come back on with his head bandaged up as Cologne were looking likely to absolutely hammer Dundee. They won 4-0, and missed a penalty. The game ended with British Army soldiers escorting the Dundee players off under a hail of bottles, chairs and various other objects. Here's Slater getting a mouthful of studs from a Cologne forward. Following that game, Dundee knocked out Sporting Lisbon 4-2, and then pished all over second favourites Anderlecht 6-2. The DABs of course also won a single league title, and got the semis of the European Cup losing out to Roma in a bitter semi-final. It's remarkable these days to think that Dundee's clubs have, between them got to two European Cup Semis, A UEFA final and another semi final. We'll never see those days again.
