Stay Classy Sinn Fein

Even harder to square the hypocrisy of SF here given that O’Neil herself was demanding tighter restrictions on the general public only a few weeks earlier. ‘ do as we say’ eh!? [emoji849]

Par for the course.

O'Neill was crying crocodile tears about "family members not being allowed to join the funeral cortege" (due to only 30 being allowed under the regulations). Perhaps if herself, the Peacemaker and the Dubliner hadn't turned up ther ewould have been room for 3 more family members to attend.

It’s easy to criticise O’Neill but be fair to her, how else was she going to test her eyesight

The Irish elections in February saw both good and bad news for the left in Ireland.

The good news is that there was a clear move left by the population, and with another FF/FG government in situ now that shift can only be expected to accelerate for the next election.

The bad news is that the movement largely coalesced around the Shinners, and that's dangerous. The Shinners carry too much baggage and ultimately, a true left wing movement cannot use a party that was indirectly involved in the killing of civilians as a vehicle to further it's aims. There will never be enough people able to forget the story of people like Jean McConville to truly build a broad consensus and change society through Sinn Fein.

Had the left coalesced around the SocDems or PBP (I'm aware they weren't standing candidates in every seat) then the odds of success would be infinitely higher.

I'd say that's McCallion's political career finished.

A bit off-topic maybe but I wonder how much Brexit & the red line in the Irish Sea might affect the constitutional balance in NI - no sushi rendered.

Don’t think Brexit will have as much influence in Northern Ireland on the constitutional issue as it is having in Scotland. Yes, the majority voted Remain but doubt many unionists will vote for a United Ireland just to stay in the EU.

Thing is though NI is effectively staying in the EU in economic terms. NI is expendable in the world view of the hard Brexiters. They are much keener on keeping Scotland on board, because they don't want any land borders with the EU or EEA's common market area. It's a lot easier to push a Unionist line in the latter rather than the former sort of environment. What Ulster Unionism needs is a deal that keeps the UK very close to the EU in economic terms. We'll find out very soon now how likely that is.

The last thing the government of the Republic wants at the minute is a border poll. No matter what way it's resolved, it gives them a major headache.

If they lose, then it's a major setback in their campaign for a United Ireland. If they win, loyalist paramilitaries are still far too active and far too large to allow a peaceful transition of power. Violence would return very quickly.
