Scotland Centre Backs

Recommended Posts

I’d be fairly confident in predicting that Hendry won’t get near the Scotland squad. Honking.
I thought he was decent when he stuck to defending. See Scotland away to Hungary for example, where he and McKenna looked solid in a 3 while Mulgrew was floundering.

The problems arose when he started trying to rove up the park with the ball at his feet (sort of) and almost always gave it away and left his team exposed. It seemed like that destroyed his confidence and he never got it back.

Made the bench at the weekend - surely time for Clarke to go and have a look at him warming up at the side of the pitch.

On that note, it's a shame the EFL Professional Development League North Section season has been cancelled, denying Clarke the chance to go and watch David Bates playing against a bunch of teenagers on a training ground in front of a handful of anoraks and players' family members.

Is Liam Cooper likely to get minutes for Leeds in the Premier League or will they sign an upgrade? I've not seen much of Leeds but he looks like the weaker of the two starting CBs to me.

The other centre half, Ben White, is on loan from Brighton and is being linked with moves to bigger teams. No certainty that he'll be at Leeds next year.

Liam Cooper would be an absolute disaster in the EPL. A reckless CB who loves to be caught out of position and respond by dragging folk down.

Jack Hendry was never even close to being good enough for Scotland, Celtics bizarre wee spell of just signing any Scot who got any hype around them allowed him to get capped. A complete bombscare.

Get the suggestion of Hendry at CB right into the sea.
Like him and Stephen O’Donnell, anyone who can’t cut it at EFL2 level should be instantly dismissed.

Incredibly harsh on O’Donnell, I’ve never been convinced he is the answer at International level but he is definitely good enough to play at the top end of League 1 or a lower Championship side.

I see Liam Lindsay isn’t even making the bench for Stoke currently. Imagine he could be on the move come the end of the season.

Also surprised to see world class Harry Souttar couldn’t stop Fleetwood getting scudded in the playoffs last night.

Lindsay made the the bench in the last few games but he's fourth or fifth choice behind Batth, Chester and Collins.  Liam is clearly  out of favour under Michael O'Neill so he definitely needs a move.

Lower end of the Championship/top of League One seems to be Lindsay's level. Perhaps Nathan Jones will sign him again for Luton. A return to Barnsley would not be a bad move either.

If lower end of the Championship was his level he wouldn't be fourth or fifth choice for a team at exactly that level.

Michael Rose is rumoured to be heading to Leeds, it would be good if the pair of them were playing together as we would have a ready made partnership.

O’Donnell, will likely make the move to a Championship club, in the next few weeks. I don’t think he’s particularly good for Scotland, certainly not a first choice right-back, but he’s better than the lowest league in the EFL .

That's was Lindsay's level when he played regularly for Barnsley. Nathan Jones paid £2 million to sign him for Stoke City but O'Neill wanted James Chester.

Stephen O'Donnell only played in League 2 for Luton Town. He was released after.James Justin (now starting Leicester City) took his place

In England, Lindsay has played regularly at 2 levels higher than O'Donnell. O'Donnell was  good at Thistle but Liam was clearly better and badly missed when he left.

It's hard to understand why Scotland managers won't give Liam a chance.

O'Donnell didn't get called up for Scotland when he was cutting about the lower leagues of England though, he got called up for Scotland when he was performing consistently well in the Scottish Premiership for a team who were the third best in the country for well over a year and a half.

Lindsay hasn't been given a chance because he has never been one of the best options available.

O'Donnell is a good Scottish Premiership player but he's not, and never has been, international class.

Nathan Jones, who developed Leicester's James Justin, clearly rated Lindsay enough to buy him for £2 million.

Lindsay is better than Bates (poor when playing for Sevco at Firhill) and Hendry who we sold after only 8 games for us.

Lindsay is undoubtedly twice the play Jack Hendry is, but if he isn't playing regularly at club level he won't be in the National Team squad.
