Rangers with millions of pounds could invest in the future of their club by promoting numerous youngster to the first team and allowing them time to develop (obviously augmented by some more experienced pros). In their youth ranks they had Scott Gallacher (now at Dumbarton), Andrew Mitchell (Linfield), Andy Little (Stirling), Lewis MacLeod (Brentford), Barrie McKay (Notts Forest), Robbie Crawford (apparently now in Iceland) and Luca Gasporatto (Falkirk/Morton on loan) amongst others. A talented and enthusiastic young team could wow their legions of fans and help set the club up for an assault on the higher leagues when they get to that stage. It was the easiest thing to do and could help develop a strong squad for future seasons - surely this would be an exciting journey for the Rangers faithful. Ally McCoist had other ideas though. In comes - Ian Black, Dene Shiels, Franco Sandaza, Kevin Kyle, Emilson Cribani, Sebastian Faure, Anestis Argyriou, Francesco Stella and David Templeton. 'Temps' only costing a bargain 700k. Black, Kyle and Templeton both leaving Hearts who had just won the Scottish Cup while Sheils and Sandaza both dropped down 3 divisions - clearly the opportunity to play for such a magnificent club was too much for most Premier League chairman to argue with. The dream strikeforce both looking deliriously happy to be at Ibrox Ian Black was of course a controversial person in Scottish football. Despite doing well at Hearts he was never near a Scotland call up. He signs for Rangers in the bottom league and gets called up almost immediately! In reserve they also had Kane Hemmings who would go on to be one of the top scorers in the top flight just a few seasons later. Did he get game time? Kane featured 5 times scoring 1 goal before going on loan up 2 divisions to Cowdenbeath (scoring 4 goals in just 7 matches). His Ibrox record matched Kevin Kyles 3 goals in 15 matches and far surpassed Sandaza's 2 in 20. The season started with a draw away to Peterhead with a last gasp goal from Andy Little securing a point. In their next away match they'd draw 1-1 away to Berwick - in the dying seconds The Wee Rangers scored a perfectly good goal to go 2-1 up but the ref blew for a foul. To this day nobody knows what the foul was given for. Another away draw followed away to Annan before the famous 1-0 loss to Stirling Albion. Brian Allison scored the only goal of the match while his manager wasn't even at the ground! Rangers threw everything at Stirling and even brought on their talismen - Kal Naismith and Kevin Kyle. They didn't win an away league game until the 28th of OCTOBER when they defeated 10 man Clyde 2-0 at Broadwood. Before the season finished they had suffered defeats against Annan and Peterhead at Ibrox by a 2-1 scoreline. They of course did thrash many sides and I'm sure their 6-2 victories over Elgin City and East Stirlingshire have lasted long in the memories of Rangers fans. The Ramsdens Cup saw Queen of the South knock them out on penalties at Ibrox after beating Brechin and Falkirk before that. Queen of the South celebrate the winning penalty The Scottish Cup opened with a 1-0 win away to Forres Mechanics before thrashings of Alloa and Elgin. They were knocked out by Dundee United in that memorable match at Tannadice - Johnny Russell scoring in the opening minute in a match which saw Kal Naismith and Ian Black sent off late on. What was the secret to their success? In game 1, a 2-1 win, they even had a phantom 93rd minute penalty awarded and saved (while the one we were given was for a brutal assault on Will Vaulks almost on the goal line... ahem). In game 2 we even gave them a quickfire 2 goal lead before our lads stubbed their fags out and routed them 3-2 with Bob McHugh in 92' sealing the deal. Sweet.
