EOS Grounds for Optimism

Recommended Posts

Camelon Juniors close to having all floodlights in place. Fittings have been attached to both enclosure roofs while work has commenced on poles behind the goals. With youth set up getting SFA accreditation, Camelon are looking very positive for SFA member application in February. Amazing how so many facilities have improved since the exodus 18 months ago

Very true. Obviously there's been a whole power of work on dressing rooms, toilets, pie huts, turnstiles, tannoys etc. and upgrading existing gear - but in headline terms I'm right in saying:

Seated stands
Easthouses (extension)
Tranent (block of terrace seated)

Covered terracing
Crossgates (in hand)
Dunipace
Tweedmouth

Floodlights
Bo'ness
Bonnyrigg
Burntisland (in hand)
Camelon
Coldstream (in hand)
Dundonald
Haddington (in hand)
Jeanfield
Musselburgh (in hand)
Tranent (in hand)
Whitehill (in hand)

all happened? Plus of course Tynecastle moved from Saughton to Meggetland for start of last season.

Furious Rovers officials hit out at latest vandalism

By Hilary Scott Reporter

The Whitestone Park stand and pitch is regularly targetted by vandals

ANGRY Peebles Rovers officials have blasted vandals for their repeated attacks at the Alec Lucas Memorial Stand. The “financially struggling” club say they cannot afford to continue repairing damage caused by louts, who last week wreaked havoc at the pitch and stand at Whitestone Park. The gang smashed bottles and destroyed the removable fence which was purchased with funds from the memorial football tournament held in honour of the fallen marine.

The chairman of Peebles Rovers, Mark Bisset, is now showing those responsible the yellow card and issued a warning of 'use the stand but respect it'. Smashed glass, litter, empty bottles, damaged dug-outs, broken windows, fires and graffiti are just some of the problems officials have been greeted with over the years.

Mark told us: “It’s a weekly occurrence these days. "We have had our clubhouse broken into in the past and we knew who it was but the police couldn’t do anything about it without proof. “We are struggling financially and really can’t afford to continually repair. "We would love to install CCTV but we just can’t afford it. I asked the council to put a bin back at the stand as the last one was burned, it took some persuading but we got it. "So there’s no excuse for all the bottles and smashed glass everywhere.”

The chairman says he is disgusted and saddened at the lack of respect for the ground and stand dedicated to a local hero.

He added: “It doesn’t seem to matter to these people that the stand is named after a fallen marine from the town. "It continues to be damaged regularly and the graffiti is shocking, there was even a swastika spray-painted at one point.”

The club’s relaxed attitude to people using the stand for social gatherings is waning.

Mark added: “By all means use the stand but respect it. "We all used it as teenagers but the things that go on down there are beyond belief. “The police can’t do a thing about it so what chance does a local football club have?”

I don't get this sort of thing at all. These incidents are in all probability done by those living in the town. Why would you want to make your own town worse by destroying something?

Absolutely.

Guess that's delinquency for you. Getting kicks out of vandalising your own community's facilities and outraging a fallen serviceman's memorial.

Earlier this month a couple of schoolboys set a fire which burnt down a substantial part of Peebles High School during the lunchtime (and caused smoke damage to much of the rest) - both since charged for 'wilful fireraising' - which has seen the lower school decamped to community centres, church halls etc. and the upper school bussed down to Galashiels until at least February.

Few days later someone got slashed in the neck in broad daylight outside Peebles library.

Seems a changed town from the affluent, gentrified, biscuit-tin image. Hopefully the good citizenry prevail over the destructive scum.

Take it its an open park. Or is it old photos I have seen?

The park is part of a large open playing complex, a fair distance from the changing rooms. However this doesn't really matter, sadly young people nowadays don't have a care in the world.

There is a severe lack of a moral compass in some young people. Hopefully peebles can repair the damage.

I grew up in Castlemilk in the 70s/80s; young ne'er-do-wells damaging property isn't exactly a new thing.

If that open stand had been in Castlemilk back then, it'd have been burnt to the ground within days.
