Hereford, Aldershot, Chester, Gretna, Halifax fans all accept that the club they now support is different from the previous incarnation which was LIQUIDATED - and there is always a tweak of the official club name. The emotional heritage of the previous club is carried on. Why do 'Rangers' consider their circumstances different.

We have some odious R*ng*rs fan who comes to our away games.

He looks like he hasn't washed, has missing teeth and looks on the verge of a heart attack.

Weird thing is, apparently his son plays for Cheltenham so the donut has no connection to us at all.

He was last spotted on crimewatch fighting alongside Chelsea fans before the FA Cup final.

That doesn't exactly narrow it down, m8.

It was David Murray.  He sanctioned the use of EBTs for tax avoidance and when Hector came sniffing for the 40 million he was owed about he put the club up for sale, making it someone else's problem.

Peter van de Ven. His missed chance at Ibrox 11/05/91 could have killed all that 9 in a row bollocks stone dead near the start, stopping the spiral of madness and hubris which led ultimately to the demise of the old rangers club. Also Hans Gilhaus same game.
A couple of Dutchmen killed Rangers. Cute.

I’d say a 7% Net Profit for doing the square root of f**k all is a pretty tremendous deal. Surely they wouldn’t manage that sort of number if they took it ‘in house’?

It'd be worse than Hearts and the missing seats - Rangers would probably forget to add a neck-hole.

If you believe some then Steven Thompson is guiltily of this nefarious deed.

On a serious note it was David Murrays actions that began their downfall.  The actions of Craig Whyte and Charles Green only helping to speed up the route to liquidation.

Although the demise of Rangers was, and is still, welcomed they were harshly treated on one thing that a lot of folk seem to miss out on.

A lot of the big English clubs (I believe Arsenal were the worst offenders down here) were happy to use EBTs as well. HMRC used Rangers as a guinea-pig to see if they could win a case against them and prove them illegal. Suddenly all the clubs down south who had been happy to use EBTs were getting in touch with HMRC to work out repayment plans to avoid the same fate.

I don't know if Rangers were chosen as the test case because they were throwing EBTs around like confetti or because they weren't an EPL club or just at random. Always thought it was a bit unfair they got the shitty end of the stick when other clubs never. With two caveats:
1: They could have held their hands up at any time and came to an agreement with HMRC instead of fighting the bill

2: The delicious irony of Her Maj's best singling out Rangers is beautiful.

Murray offered HMRC £10m to go away.

They told him to shove it as they knew Rangers were liable for much more.  What Rangers were doing was thoroughly immoral and it's delightful it blew up in their faces, but unfortunate that they got to retain ill-gotten footballing gains.

If other clubs got away with similar, they shouldn't have.  I'm not sure that the scales are comparable though.
