Fair play mate - more than makes up for him being woefully under qualified.

I didn't say that. Still think we need someone experienced you can organise a team. That's more obvious to me now after yesterday's mauling.

Do Sevco have any ideas other than throwing money at a big name and waiting for the Struth Fairy to magically make everything better?

That certainly seems to be their strategy. To appease their fans mainly.

Plus signing not very good Canadian midfielders.  Not quite sure how that works, but that's their cunning plan.  Managers who have never managed and players who aren't very good.

It's a pretty decent move for Gerard.  The alternative is wating for a gig in England to come up - MK Dons offered him the job earlier and he was linked to Ipswich recently.  If he took a job like that and failed then he'd find it pretty difficult to get any decent sort of jobs and would be straight into the Paul Ince/Roy Keane downward managerial spiral.

He takes this job, he gets managerial experience and if he fails he can palm it off as being the fault of the dysfunctional club and he'll probably be able to still get jobs like MK Dons or Ipswich in England.  If he were to succeed then he can probably leave Rangers and get a better gig in England.  The issue, of course, being what's defined as a success at Rangers these days.  Title win?  Cup win?  Clear in second place?  European run?  Holding Celtic to two goals?

ETA, obviously it's a fairly hilariously bad move for Rangers.  Could be a good laugh for everyone else though.

Interesting to see the increased exposure wee old Rangers now have because Stevie G has decided to declare an interest.  Particularly interesting are the points raised by Alan Shearer on the subject.

I think it's a no-brainer for him,"

a case of right answer but wrong working.  Taking this job at this stage would indeed show Gerrard to have little in the way of brains, as it seems to be a thankless task that needs a really experienced head to come in and tell everyone involved what a fucking shambles they are.  If he believes he can do it, then more power to him, but the only thing this appointment seems to be is a "big name" that the board believes will distract from anything.  If he doesn't hit the ground running, goes out of Europe early ( again) and then gets pumped off Celtic (again), then all they have is a big name on a big wage who can't do the job.  Again.

"He'll be able to attract bigger players because of who he is and what he brings to the football club,"

Perhaps, but I'd expect players to look a bit further than "oh f**k it's Steven Gerrard!" when they choose which club they want to go to.  Do they really want to come to a club whose only prospect over the next few years is likely to be finishing 2nd, and hopefully (for them) cutting the massive wedge of a gap between them and Celtic?

"It's a big if because there are no guarantees but if everything is put in place and he is promised funds

You haven't been keeping up to date with Rangers, have you Alan?

and I'm pretty sure if he accepts they would have to deliver what they have promised to him

Oh, Alan...

"If he were to take another job, for argument's sake in the Championship, it's a very, very tough league. He's got to then also get up to the Premier League and there's 12 or 13 teams can do that."

Granted, this is probably true.  Quality-wise, it isn't quite what its marketing makes it out to be - much like it's big brother - but it is a tough league to get out of without spending a disproportionate amount of money, or doing whatever Wolves have done this season.  However, it's then implying that the Scottish Premiership isn't tough.  In the context of what Gerrard is being brought in to do, it's a fucking mammoth task.  Celtic are playing well within themselves on the pitch, only really lifting themselves to absolutely cuff Rangers when they feel like it, and very, very much within themselves off the pitch.  I firmly believe that if Rangers got their house in order and spent a bit of money, Celtic would just drop more.  And not in a "they spend a fiver, we spend a tenner" bluster, in a "we've got all this money we've never needed, but we'll do it just to f**k you up" way.  If he was being brought in with the sole objective of finishing 2nd, then it is (or should be) a fairly easy job.  But he's presumably being brought in to best Celtic.  Aye,  good luck with that.

All in all, you've made yourself look about as thick as you usually sound, Alan.

Expect loan deals for youngters at Liverpool to be speedily arranged.

Aye, those loan deals from Newcastle were sensational.

Looks like Ipswich Town have been showing interest in Steven Gerrard over the last couple of weeks.
I have also heard that due to 'major developments' Gerrard is having second thoughts about the Rangers job and that he had been in touch with people in the know including Graham Murty who is being treated with a lot of disrespect by Rangers right now. Gerrard should be aware of what he might be walking into.
Keep an eye on who's being interviewed for the Ipswich Town job, so far its just been Sol Campbell.
Chris Coleman is the bookies favourite.

You must care about this decision quite a lot if you’re keeping an eye on the Ipswich job odds.

Most of us will just sit back and laugh regardless of who they choose, safe in the knowledge that their stupid wee club is debt-ridden and major trophy free.

Not as much as Ian Wright sitting beside him on MOTD2 last night after Shearer said that, who said himself that Rangers had done amazingly to get back to where they are just now after what's happened to them.

I know we look from 'the outside' so to speak but what the f**k can there be to this shambles of a company club that anyone thinks "this makes sense, it's the right move for me".

The only thing "no brainer" about it is avoid like the plague.
