parsforlife Posted June 21, 2019 Share Posted June 21, 2019 2 queues allow the road to hold more traffic, therefore a 4 mile tailback using a single lane becomes a 2 mile tailback using two lanes. As pointed out earlier, the rate of progress through the bottleneck is identical. Except when some knobend tries to force their way in at the last minute, causing traffic to bunch up and slow down.We might be going through the bottleneck at the same rate, but it makes absolutely no sense to not use up the available road space before that point.All you achieve by having everyone merge early is create longer queues, so instead of using the full length of the slip road we use half of it, this now means instead of having a queue on the slip road we have have a queue that clogs up the roundabout on the approach, this now means we have a % of cars that are sitting in a queue of traffic because of a bottleneck on a road they are not even using, holding them up with no reason,And since these drivers are being held up then those that are going towards the bottleneck now need to sit behind traffic that doesn’t have to be there.This queue being longer than needed then blocks a junction, which slows down a road that is not related to the bottleneck several miles away... 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Don't disagree with this but that's about what's good for the road network, not what's best for the drivers in the queue at the bottleneck. The way it works now, when drivers see the sign saying lane closure in 800 yds, a lot of them immediately slow down and try to filter, some of them drive on a bit before trying to filter and some drive right up to the very end and try and force their way in. Then you've got the lorry drivers that pull out to stop people getting past them. It's a mess and the idea that traffic zips along smoothly filtering efficiently is a fantasy. Idiot in front of me caused me to miss the lights by refusing to go into the relief lane, instead waiting on the static traffic, which never moved. Fat f****** sailed straight on, fortunately I was able to stop, continuing to indicate left causing much confusion to other road users.
