Until relatively recently they would usually finish above Nairn and Rothes, and regularly topped Brora and Wick. In the 80s they ended a league campaign well above Ross County. It was fairly common to finish above Ross County tbf. 2 of their 3 HL titles were in the early 90s under Bobby Wilson. A great but short period which led to them being in the right place at the right time when the league places were up for grabs, coupled with a 4-0 hammering of Forfar the Saturday before the vote. Elgin can only look back at what might have been.

Rothes nearly went out of business that year as I recall and Fort finished mid-table. Weird how they do seem to have the odd season of being alright. FairWeatherFan
Their wikipedia page handily breaksdown their league position for every season they've been in the Highland League https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_William_F.C.#League_positions Highest Finish was 11th (1986-87) Bottom 16 out of 33 completed seasons. Which will likely be 17 out of 34 once this season is over.

They also beat Preston Athletic in the cup. Fort did finish 13th / 18 the previous year though. Rothes again bottom.

Did splendidly. They've got loads of money now but they're still shite. The manager who took over after that season recruited a load of youngsters from the local Welfare leagues and there was an incredible improvement. He was sacked by the new sugar daddies.

That must be the most cautious use of the word "likely" in the history of words.

Pretty sure that was the year ICT basically loaned half our youth system to Fort.
Barry Ferguson's Hat
Surely Chelsea could loan them some dece players.
Highland Capital
It'd be interesting to know how many players have gone on to have some kind of football career after playing for Fort. John McGinlay went onto play for Scotland, Bolton and plenty of others (though fellow local Duncan Shearer never did) and Grant Munro had a season on loan. Sam Urquhart was another but to a lesser degree - he went onto play for Elgin. There must be a few others surely.

They were a big club back then and the rivalry with Caley was huge. In a ‘sliding doors’ world this would have been the Highland Derby. By 2000 a lot of the novelty of playing in the SFL had gone, and much of the HL talent had been hoovered up by the first entrants, but both had now reached tier 2. No disrespect to County who are the true rivals now.
