When trying to explain to the German media why a team from Scotland no one had ever heard of scudded the second favourites 8-1, he said that Dundee had targeted the keeper, when it had been a total accident. The ill-feeling largely stemmed from that. Ian Ure and Alex Hamilton's accounts are pretty good. In fact Monchengladbach finished 14th out of 16 in the regional Oberliga West in 1960. They received a bye into the round, lost 11-0 and didn't play in Europe again for another 10 years. On top of that they had no players in the West Germany World Cup squad of 1958 and only 1 in the 1962 squad. Suspect almost any top flight Scottish team would have cuffed them.
