Star Trek Discovery

Pluto wasn't as bad an experience as expected to be honest. Watched the first two episodes just now and the show still just isn't very good.

First episode wasn't bad as it looked like it was more like a disaster of the week type episode of Star Trek and avoided everyone getting very, very emotional all the time.

But then episode 2 started with the characters getting very, very emotional and then they set up what is going to be the big storyline for the series that will likely end up as much of a wet fart as the big season long storylines always do.

But I'm a mug who likes star trek so I'll no doubt keep watching. Bizarre to me that the best star trek shows on TV are a comedy cartoon and The Orville (which isn't exactly amazing either).

I wish to hell it would take itself a bit less seriously. Once again the universe is in jeopardy, death and destruction loom large and everyone is going about with their faces tripping them and doing that emotional whisper-voice when talking to each other.

At the weekend I put an old DS9 on - they robbed a casino, taking the piss out of Oceans 11.  More of this needed.

Nice to see the wee NX-01 model

Surprised they’ve got shot of Tilly, although I think it would have been better if she was homesick for the past, cause who wouldn’t be?

Wasn’t really a fan of the whole will they won’t they with Ni’var, them rejoining seemed very quick and a bit pointless

There might be some unusual directorial choices for a while. Unfortunately, during production both of Sonequa Martin-Green's parents passed away. To allow for a leave of absence they shot around her character as much as possible, and did some rewriting. Then played catch up when she came back.

That's likely to see the back of Burnham's head in some group scenes and being the only one in frame a bit more often.

Enterprise seasons 3 and 4 are absolute quality tbf

Yes.  Jeffrey Coombes was brilliant.

It really suffered from several poor stories in seasons 1 & 2.

Also, it focused too much on the three main characters.  I suppose you could almost say that about the original series.  Discovery does that too much as well.

I like it when they go out on location.  I think of them as "Blue Sky Planet" episodes.  Even DS9 managed plenty of them.  Discovery really struggles here.

I get the impression that the writers got together at the start of the series and decided that they would focus on mental health. Every episode is about it, including the last 2 about the computer's mental health.

It isn't making it better.

Quick note on the US air dates for new/continuing series.

Star Trek Discovery: 10th February 2022

Star Trek Picard: 3rd March 2022

Strange New Worlds: 5th May 2022

Star Trek Lower Decks: May 2022 (no specific date)

Only once at least one of these shows (plus Prodigy) ends will they create a new show. The three ideas going forward are a Section 31 show starring Michelle Yeoh, a Starfleet Academy show and Ceti Alpha V, based on the life of Khan in exile.

Are they not hinting at doing an Anthology Series ?

Sulu and Archer episodes are some of the rumours.

Christ on a bike, this is awful.

An unknown alien species sends a pod with a breathable atmosphere to the ship, inviting the crew to visit. Any other Star Trek show and they would have hopped right on and been away, driving on the story. Not this show. In this show the crew needed to go away and talk about their wellbeing and feelings for 10 minutes before deciding to go. Shouting exercises are as much fun to watch as you can imagine.

And they are STILL doing the computer-with-a-mental-health-issue thing.

Maybe when @Miguel Sanchez has finished torturing himself with Doctor Who he can watch this and let us know which is worse.

Having never seen an episode of any Star Trek in my life, that doesn't sound like the one to break my duck with.
