congratulations to the Burgh on winning the title today. Well deserved. Enjoy your night and good luck in your ventures next year Toffee.

Thank you my good friend. It has been a great season for us after the huge disappointment we had last season! Ultimate aim for Musselburgh was to be in the top 2 come end of season and get a straight return to the Super League! The next aim was then to be promoted as champions. Had we stayed in the current set-up, job done! Fact that we are going onto new venture, didn’t detract the team from these two aims.

I have no doubt that our first aim is exactly the same as Jon and his Fauldhouse players were aiming for as well! That scenario is still in your own hands, and with The Hoose still in a cup quarter final, the boys of Park View should be proud of its achievements this year!

The guy that does the report for the Musselburgh matches, is a bit under the weather following the excitement of the match. So, the report will not be written until tomorrow afternoon.

Not surprisingly, there was no individual who won the supporters club man of the match award today.

As the 3-0 win against Dalkeith, secured the league title, the award was shared amongst all of the Burgh players and coaching staff. Well done guys and thank you for a great and enjoyable season.

Still matches of importance to look forward to as we head towards season end.

On Saturday, top 2 teams in the league meet at Olivebank. If Musselburgh win/draw they will have gone through this year’s campaign unbeaten at home!

Fauldhouse look to finish runners up in the league, and a win will help this process.

First match this season, was 6 months ago, with the score 1-1 at Park View.

League match 27 was a home game for Musselburgh against Dalkeith. The reverse fixture, exactly nine months ago, saw Musselburgh win 3-1 to make it three straight wins at the start of the season. If Musselburgh won that would be 22 wins out of 27 league matches and also the Premier League title. Having been sent off last week, Chris Gray was the only change to that match, with Jono McManus resuming his position in the back four!

If memory serves me correctly, this was the first time that Musselburgh lost the coin toss at home, so were shooting towards the clubhouse in the first half. Match kicked off at 14:31. With 8 minutes on the clock, Jono was spoken to by the ref as he body checked a Dalkeith player. Paul Tansey took the free kick, and in turn ball was headed into the box, but Jono cleared it away.

In 10 minutes, Stephen MacDonald played a great ball into the path of Sean (Skip) Murphy. Skip ran to the by-line and crossed ball into the centre of the six yard box. Michael Moffat was first to the ball, but his shot went out for a by-kick. Four minutes later, Tansey lost possession of the ball. Skip passed to Mathu King, who then played to Michael. His shot trundled towards the line, and instead of leaving the ball for Michael to run onto and probably score, Mathu back heeled the ball towards the goal, but was ruled offside.

The match seemed to be played as an end of season fixture as neither keeper had much to do at this point. Could have changed in 25 minutes when McGlashan blasted an effort from 30 yards out. The shot came crashing off the bar, so very unlucky for Dalkeith.

On 28 minutes, good play on the left wing between Stephen and Jed Davie, resulted in a corner, which Jed took. Easton punched ball off the line. Dalkeith then played the ball up the park with Tansey shooting from outside the box, but this was saved by Ally Adams. A minute later, Stephen took a long throw in to the box. Mathu went to ground claiming a penalty, but the ref wasn’t interested!

Musselburgh were awarded a corner on 31 minutes which was taken by Gary Cherrie. Ball fell to Mathu who tried to curle a shot into the top right of the net, but was too high and went over. A minute later, Gary played a great cross ball from one side of the pitch to the other. Skip received the ball and squared it to Michael. His shot was easily saved by Easton. Musselburgh had a couple of other chances in the next five minutes but no goals came of these. With 4 minutes to go till half time, the Dalkeith captain, McGlashan took a heavy knock, and played no further part in the match. He was replaced just before half time by a Trialist. Score at the break was 0-0.

Maybe the reality of winning the league title was beginning to affect Musselburgh’s performance, which was quite life-less.

Second half started at 15:32.  Four minutes later, Tansey and Laing linked up well, and the ball was played to Caddow, whose shot went just wide of the post.  On 54 minutes, Easton made a great save from a Jackie Myles shot. Following this, Mathu had the ball on the right wing, squared it back to Skip who actually missed the ball, which ran towards Jackie. His shot from outside the box seemed goal bound until Easton made the save!

Two minutes later, Easton wasn’t so fortunate. In the middle of the Dalkeith half, Gary dispossessed Tansey of the ball. He turned and played to Stephen, who then passed to Skip. The ball returned to Gary who played a good 1 - 2 with Mathu. From inside the box, Gary shot past Easton’s left hand side and into the net. 1-0 to Musselburgh. The players all jumped on Gary, who surprisingly emerged unscathed following 112 stone lying on him! The Burgh supporters seemed to be relieved and the atmosphere took a turn for the better!

An hour into the match and a corner to Dalkeith. Wales took the kick and a shot on target from Caddow was kicked off the line by Matty Lynch. Two minutes later and the centre half, Hall, was spoken to by the ref for a foul on Jed. Brad Donaldson took the free kick which was saved by the keeper.

Dalkeith’s next substitution was McMillon going off; replaced by  Buckley. This was followed on the 70 minute mark with Musselburgh’s Bradley Whyte coming on for Jackie. This was Jackie’s 200th appearance for Musselburgh. An absolutely brilliant player, who has just come back from a lengthy injury lay-off and you can see the old magic of his former play coming back!

Into the last 20 minutes and a ball from Jed found Michael on the right wing . Ball was played to Skip, in the centre of the park. Skip hit an opportune shot from 25 yards and the ball came off the top of the cross bar. A couple of minutes later, Tansey was booked for a foul. The final substitution of the match saw Wales go off for Dalkeith with the second trialist coming on.

With four minutes of normal play left, the first trialist (no. 12), had a shot, but it went straight to Ally. Ball was then played up the park, with Skip collecting the ball, passing to Michael whose shot slowly went towards the goal for Musselburgh’s second. Mathu wanted to make sure, but as he kicked the ball into the net, the ref blew from offside.

Into the final minute, Musselburgh were awarded three throw-ins in a row. Ball then went out for a corner, on the right side of the pitch. Gary took it and eventually the came over to the left hand side. Skip passed to Brad D, who played back to Bradley W. He played a 1 - 2 with Skip. Bradley then ran to the by-line and crossed the ball in. Mathu back headered the ball which bounced off of Michael’s head and into the net for a 2-0 lead.

A minute into injury time and Dalkeith were awarded a corner kick, which Tansey took. Ally punched the ball out and it was met by the no.12, whose shot was saved by Ally. Ally then launched a kick up the park. It took a bounce and then headed towards the goals, which Easton had to put out for a corner. Gary Cherrie took the kick, and Jono rose to header the ball into the net. 3-0 and that was it. At times in the match it was a struggle to watch, but Musselburgh showed their worth by keeping plugging away until the goals came.

Celebrations began! After all the hand shakes and hugs, the Burgh players, subs bench and coaches let out a great big cheer as the league title belonged to Musselburgh! The players went off to further cheers and applause from the supporters within the ground and applauded by Dalkeith officials as well.

Onto the park came a table, the league winners medals and most importantly the Premier League Trophy. The players returned to the pitch, with a change of top, with lettering confirming they were Premier League winners for 2017 - 18. Probably the best bit was that the children of the players and management team all had on replica teashirts, confirming that their daddy was a champion! The kids also had medals on, which was a lovely touch from Musselburgh Atheltic! Players and management team all then went up and were presented with their winner medals by a SJFA official, before Mathu King, the captain, picked up the trophy and then did a wee dance. What a player Mathu is, but John Travolta he ain’t.

Plenty of pictures followed, with everyone wanting to hold the trophy and it just felt like a great happy event with the sun shining down on the best team in the league  - by far!

For players, supporters, former players who returned to see their former teammates and friends win the title, it was the end of a great day.  The night would be taken care of with more celebrations, and then the management team trying to get order back next week, as 2nd place Fauldhouse are visitors to Olivebank.

Still three matches to play but there are still aims to be achieved.

Seeing the joy on the players faces;  this is without the best day I have had watching my team - Musselburgh Athletic!

After the jubilation of Saturday the players return to Olivebank for the final home match of the season.

Fauldhouse are the opponents and still lots to play for. Musselburgh looking for point(s) to set a new premier league record and to remain undefeated at home this season. Fauldhouse look to secure 2nd place in the league ahead of Haddington.

Must be one of the most important matches this season so hope a good crowd comes along to watch.

It's only right imo

Thanks you JC1.

It's fitting that the teams meet on our last home match of season. Both teams got relegated. Both teams had new management team last year but committees had the confidence to see what would happen this time around & it has worked.

Had we been staying in the Juniors it looks as if both teams would have made a straight return to Super League, which doesn't usually happen.

I and am sure all your friends at Musselburgh, including Calvin, Allan and Mathu wish you all best next year. Given recent results including the one against Bo'ness you should be looking at a top half finish!

League match 28 was 1st against 2nd with Musselburgh against Fauldhouse. This was Musselburgh’s last home league match, with the final two games being played away from Olivebank. A hot sunny afternoon, saw Musselburgh run onto the pitch through a guard of honour, of players and official. A great gesture by Fauldhouse and appreciated by the home team and supporters alike! One change from last week’s starting line up saw Bradley Whyte in for Matty Lynch.

Match kicked off at 14:30. A great start for Musselburgh, Who took the lead after three minutes. From inside the Fauldhouse half, Sean (Skip) Murphy passed to Michael Moffat on the right wing. His cross was met by Mathu King who headed the ball into the left hand side of the goals. 1-0 to Burgh.

Four minutes later, Gary Cherrie had a chance to make it 2-0 but his shot went wide of the post. Lots of Musselburgh possession ensued and they were well on top in the early stages of the match. On nine minutes, Jed Davie played a great cross pitch ball to Michael on the right side of the pitch. His pass to the far side post saw Mathu and Bradley Whyte chase the same ball. Bradley’s shot missed, with what seemed a sitter. Mathu was non too happy with his team mate! With 12 minutes gone, Brad Donaldson played the ball to Jed who, in turn passed to Mathu. He back heeled the ball into the centre of the goal area, which went by Stephen MacDonald. Michael, however, got to the ball and his shot was cleared off the line by the left back Stewart.

Skip was fouled on 17 minutes and this lead to a corner. The keeper, Hutchison took charge of the danger and his kick out to the left wing produced a great piece of skill from Gribben, whose control of high ball to his feet was magnificent! Jono McManus tackled to put ball out for a throw in. Five minutes after and the Hoose were awarded a free kick. The ball was played to O’Donnell, who headed towards the centre forward, Currie. Ally Adams shouted that it was his ball, but then didn’t move for it. Currie aimed his shot to the left of Ally; 1-1.

On 25 minutes, came the moment the1934 Club supporters and the now ‘older’ remaining young team had been waiting on! Ball was played out of defence. Bradley got the ball and ran towards to Fauldhouse area. His shot found the net and jubilation at the ‘hill’ end of the shed seemed endless! Bradley’s first goal for Musselburgh, hopefully many more to come! 2-1 to Musselburgh.

On 26 minutes, Stephen passed the ball to Michael, (who did more steps in that time, than I do on an average day). His shot just went past the keeper’s right post. Musselburgh were so much in control of the match by this time  with the Fauldhouse defence on both sides of the park being tormented; attack after attack. So, on 31 minutes, Fauldhouse made the first substitution of the match. MacLeod replaced Arrol, who straight away made his way to the dressing room.

With 33 minutes played, Stephen dispossessed a Fauldhouse player. With Mathu offside, he let Stephen go by him and up the park. Stephen is normally a fast runner with the ball, but not this time as he lost the ball just as he got to the Fauldhouse penalty area. The Hoose had two forward plays in quick succession, neither of which were successful. The next goal came in 40 minutes, from a free kick to Musselburgh on the left wing. Brad D took it and ball fell to Stephen in the six yard box. He slotted ball into the net for a 3-1 lead to Musselburgh.

A few final flourishes for Fauldhouse produced nothing and the half time whistle blew with Musselburgh going in 3-1 up.

Second half started at 15:28 with the second Fauldhouse sub coming on. James Brown replaced Lawrie and it showed how much The Hoose management team wanted to claw themselves back into the match, as Brown was still carrying an injury.

From the kick off, Musselburgh were on the attack with Mathu down the right wing. He tried to cross the ball to Bradley on the other side of the pitch. However, the ball bounced off the top of the bar and out for a by-kick. Just like the first half, a goal was scored after three minutes. Fauldhouse won a corner, taken by MacLeod. It was cleared by Michael, only as far as O’Donnell, whose shot crashed into the top of the net. Great start to the second half to The Hoose, and score now 3-2.

Another forward move on 53 minutes saw Patrick with a shot from the edge of the box, but it went wide. A couple of minutes later and another chance for the away team. Ball played into the Musselburgh box and though Jed was closest to the ball, Patrick got there first but his header went wide. On 57 minutes, there were shouts for a penalty when the ball blasted off Jono. Ref played on and the danger was cleared.

There was a big change in the match. Fauldhouse must have listened to the Fauldhouse management team at half time, as they were on the up, and Musselburgh, had difficulty keeping hold of the ball. All the confidence of the first half was slipping away.

However, Musselburgh are not at the top because they are lucky! On 65 minutes Stephen collected the ball on the left wing. He went past Nolan, who almost brought the forward down with his tackle. Stephen passed to Mathu and he slotted the ball into the net - a goal definitely required by the home side. Shortly after, Hoose’s final substitution,  with Gribben off; replaced by Magee.

On 74 minutes, near calamity just about ended in a third goal for Fauldhouse. Ball went towards the goal area. Ally shouted the ball was his - but it wasn’t! Magee got the ball and chipped Ally, with the ball agonisingly, for the Hoose, just passing the post. Just how important this could have been came a couple of minutes later. Mathu had the ball on the left and flicked it to Bradley W, who found Stephen. He should have made it 5-2, but Hutchison saved the shot.

That was to be Bradley’s last kick of ball as he was replaced by Conor Thomson. At that point, the match was held up for around five minutes. Hutchison kicked the ball out, as he was aware of an unwell supporter at the slope side of the pitch. Medics were called. When the fan seemed a bit better (?) play continued. On 82 minutes, ball came to Skip in the middle of the Fauldhouse half. He had a choice of passing to Stephen on left wing, or playing through the middle to Mathu. Skip chose the latter. Mathu won a chase to the ball and scored with the ball ending up in the corner of the net. 5-2 to Musselburgh.

In 84 minutes, ball came to Conor who ran to the edge of the box and his shot brought an outstanding save from Hutchison and out for a corner.  A couple of minutes later, there was a halt to proceedings. The ref appeared to have a change of mind and a free kick was awarded to Musselburgh, midway in the opposition half. Mathu’s quick kick found Conor on the right wing, but he was taken out by Stewart, who got the first yellow card of the match.

Into injury time and Mathu got his fourth goal of the match after receiving a pass from his co-forward Stephen MacDonald.

So, result was 6-2 to Musselburgh; the same score as occurred in the first league match back in August 17, when Taport were the visitors to Olivebank.

Musselburgh’s home league record was 14 wins and a draw in their 15 league matches; an incredible 43 points out of 45!  Next league match for Musselburgh is on Wednesday, away to Whitburn.

Fauldhouse, on the other hand, take a break of league action, with a Fife and Lothian quarter final tie away to Bonnyrigg on Monday night. Musselburgh wish Fauldhouse all the best in that match!

For second week there was more than one winner of the Supporters man of match award. Last Saturday, the team collectively won the award for winning the league title.

Yesterday Bradley Whyte was joint man of match alongside Mathu King. As usual, Bradley did an immense amount of running, mainly to support the front duo, but he also scored his first goal for the team. Mathu King scored four goals and on a good day could have doubled that as there were clear chances in front of him. Both worthy winners.

Fauldhouse were not at their best in the first half, but there was a big improvement from the start of the second half. Thought Darren Gribben was their best player until he was subbed, with David O’Donnell and Jamie MacLeod (sub) the best of the rest.

Really sorry that Kevin McDonald is leaving the club, Had a great partnership, supporting Calvin, with Musselburgh winning this year’s Premier League. Both are full of encouragement of their team, which paid dividends, with 23 wins out of 28 league matches so far this season.

I am sure Geordie will go on to do bigger and better things in the future! All best!

Unfortunately not. There was a problem with the charger for the battery / recorder, which wasn’t noticed until just before kick-off, so match couldn’t be filmed.

There were certainly a bigger crowd the previous week at Dalkeith when Burgh won the league than at Fauldhouse.

Not sure what you mean about a bigger crowd than usual? Having been at all the away grounds this season, there were more supporters at  Musselburgh and Tranent than elsewhere.
