Council funding rescues Vale and Coldstream who'll join the 'Volt Age':

I've considerable sympathy for Peebles, Eyemouth and Duns (who actually put in trunking / cabling when built NHP) tbf.
Have Peebles ever tried to get lights at Whitestone or are you refering to the community facility that got nimby'd?

I'm just speaking more generally - in neighbouring East Lothian the council has given funding to clubs (except Ormiston) in order to get floodlights and obtain SFA membership for the first time. It's great news that Vale and Coldstream will get help to retain theirs. However it's a shame that Peebles has had nothing except help with some fencing - as you say plans for a new 3G facility were kyboshed when non-sporting factions in the town argued over which other part of town it should be put in.

Meanwhile in Berwickshire there still isn't a single 2G or 3G pitch suitable for football. If you include community pitches in schools then recent cash for Jedburgh means 7 of the 12 major Border towns will have all weather surfaces (and Tweedbank too) while Berwickshire accounts for 4 of other 5. (Innerleithen is the last incidentally). It's sad if the likes of Duns and Eyemouth won't get help with lights and locals have to leave the county for 3G.

Took them long enough. This was supposed to be done by the end of year two of the LL as part of creating a suitable league for SPFL clubs to be relegated into. Actually trying to comply in that regard didn't help Selkirk's finances any, so VoL have been helped out in a big way by the flexibility that was provided by the LL and SFA on floodlights to full members of long standing in recent seasons.

While VoL were the last to become licenced from the original group of LL clubs, they didn't fail on floodlights as they weren't a requirement of licencing at the time.

Floodlights were supposed to be a tier 5 requirement from the outset over and above entry level. There was only supposed to be a two year grace period to become compliant on this in an LL context. The LL got round this for some of their members by only requiring clubs to have access to a floodlit ground if necessary at any point, but that was not what was initially expected.

It may have been one of the grand ideas on paper before reality set in. By the time it was up and running my main memory was over the concern to everyone licenced by 2014-15 and the fear that clubs would be kicked out if they failed.

When they started to gear up for 2014-15 applicants any notion of floodlights had certainly gone:

Quote

Scottish Lowland Football League ¡V Expression of Interest
You are invited to express an interest in joining the Scottish Lowland Football League (SLFL) for season 2014/15.
Expressions of interest should be intimated to David Baxter, SLFL Secretary, by completion of the attached form and provision of information regarding your plans to achieve a club licence by May 2015 and how this will be financed. The relevant sections (5, 6 and 8) of the SFA Club Licensing Manual are attached.

The timetable of events is:
„h January 2014 ¡V Clubs are informed that applications may be made
„h 31
st March 2014 ¡V Last date for receipt of applications
„h 7
th April 2014 ¡V SLFL Board makes first review and contacts clubs for any clarifications or additional information
„h 28
th April 2014 ¡V SLFL Board makes final selection of up to four clubs

The process will be overseen by assessors appointed by the SLFL Board. Clubs will be assessed on the basis of their returns with a maximum possible score of 50. The points will be awarded as follows based on the Club Licensing criteria:

Section 5 (Ground Criteria)
Up to 20 points
Section 6 (First team football)
Up to 12 points
Section 8 (Legal, admin, finance, codes of practice)
Up to 8 points

The remaining ten points will be awarded based on the club¡¦s on-field performance in the last three seasons and its organisation and management.

They were last in lowland league to try done. Only crossgates and inverkeithing in eosfl premier dont have lights

VoL like a lot of clubs had to scramble to get floodlights after the change to licensing requirements. Its not like they were just sitting on a 5-6 figure sum of cash.

In the end a lot of clubs got the benefit of council help. VoL and Coldstream didn't even get the funding from their Council until early this year and seem to have lucked out that it happened pre-Covid. Otherwise they might have been screwed.

By my reckoning tonight may well see the most floodlit non-league games in the history of Scottish football? Total of 22 between the Lowland (7), EOS Premier (7) and EOS First Division (7), plus Brora. Could've been more but Stirling Uni EOS v Newburgh has moved to tomorrow; similarly Vale v Bo'ness which has also been reversed; and Leith v Ormiston off as ground closed to evening matches currently; plus Whitehill v Inverkeithing, Penicuik v Musselburgh and Easthouses v Hawick off waterlogged.

Add the Scottish League Cup it becomes 37 and that's without Highland or South.

Remarkable progress been made over recent years.

Looks like Gretna's floodlights will be ready to go again sometime this week according to facebook page on Saturday

MESSAGE FROM MANAGER, ROWAN ALEXANDER
'Well here we hopefully go. What a start to the season. No one, I guess, could have imagined a start like this. No fans. No dressing rooms. Face masks. Social distancing. Sanitizing. But I am delighted to say we have All been actively involved with the safety and protection of everyone who enters the ground.
Great news for you all in that our floodlights are up and should be ready for next week.

Are these new lights? I've seen Edinburgh City play under lights at Raydale in a midweek before hence the question.
