Because the manager blocked them and he threw a strop and then was taken off the role because he was shite at it.
Another factor was that there was a support function and the people that ran it couldn't do their jobs well either so they used him as a gopher and he got rewarded.
Eventually he calmed down and did better at it but it was all on a plate.

Trying to reason with it or looking objectively just makes it look like I'm terrible or that it's just so fucked up that theres no point in actually reasoning with it.
Others have left reviews on glassdoor saying exactly the same things both here and abroad. The entire company is messed up.

I do admit that moaning doesnt help but I've barely complained ever to any boss even at appraisals. I did query the alky guy thing and used an analogy of winning a race and losing and was then treated even worse and that's when the bullying started.
Given a great review at the same time as being physically threatened and threatened with the sack. That says to me I hit the nail on the head, I'm not doing anything wrong and they cant look at themselves and admit they're shitty people who are completely out of their depth when it comes to management. All of them were promoted from non management roles without training. Go figure.

How long have you worked there?

Fucking hell

Shouldn't be surprised at that tbh, it’s now blatantly clear you are just one of those guys who enjoys being miserable as it gives you something to moan about.

I'm very much against going at people personally with 'alky' jibes. Perhaps your work instead of apparently overloading him with more tasks could try and help the guy out?
Maybe they have, I don't know. The character assisinations aren't a very good look though.
Guy was a student who couldn't shake off the drinking culture and continued with it every night. Was given numerous chances to try and improve but caused absolute chaos within the department. They did help him out by rewarding him for failure.
Sorry if alky seems insensitive but it was reason he was poor at his job. He was like that before and now hes left is still like that. To wake himself up he needed two alarm clocks and bought himself a wifi lightbulb that strobbed for five minutes.
The previous supervisor had to go and pick him up at his door every day to get him into work.
They did everything to help.

So to translate: He came in with a hangover sometimes, used 2 alarm clocks and got a lift into work from a previous supervisor?

Yes, and on the days not picked up was hours late. Would also go home half days quite often.
Add to that stealing others equipment, disregarding rules, forging documents and making others fix his mistakes.

Other people, including myself, given verbal warnings for being a minute late, once.

But we should have helped him more.

Three years ago nearly to the day, and God knows how many years before. You must really like having something to moan about or you would have left years ago. You're not an indentured serf.

Colleagues all fight, spy on and bitch about each other due to lack of management and the shambles it has created over the years. I've tried my best to improve things and suggested ways to improve things but being conscientious and hard working actually makes things worse. Some people do the jobs or three of four others but get treated like shit. It's properly soul destroying and hard to cope with at times.
Some people get treated like Milton from office space because they're not sycophantic automatons who don't go with the flow even when it's shambolic and not working.
There's a culture of overtime greed and working hard shows people up. It's so fucked up.

Your mental health is not worth messing with... you can really stop reading here.

I was in a job for 10 years, been passed over for promotion twice by people who couldn't do the job and openly admitted they only went for it because of the extra money. I kind of accepted it as although I was technically good, I wasn't really ready to manage anyone yet.  The 3rd time it came up, the job was essentially written for me but again they ignored me and the girl I worked with (she should have got it if I never) and gave it to someone who never had 3/4's of the essential criteria. To make matters worse they were expecting me to train him in the job.

My wife was off on maternity leave at the time and she noticed straight away, I had completely changed really angry going to work in the morning, and raging coming home It wasn't fair on her or the baby as i was taking it out on them at home. She pushed me to leave. Within 2 months i had a new job, wee bit less money but i was happy and was back to my normal peaceful self.

1 HR , don’t work for YOU , they are there to Protect the EMPLOYER , expect nothing of them and you will not be disappointed

How can they protect the Employer if they are not at the same time supporting employees?  The number of employment claims the company would be facing would ruin it.

Absolutely this. They're there to be impartial. Yes, their wages are paid by the employer but so are mines and I'm the one making complaints.

Maybe ive been exceptionally lucky in that the previous 2 HR's worked to rule and were exceptionally pleasant, understanding and negotiable. I suspect with the number of cases won on the employees side that's why they were both made redundant. It's no coincidence that morale has gone down, complaints up and the union and HSE have been called numerous times since the big shot took the HR job on himself.

HR are a necessary evil - necessary because employers and employees often have opposing positions so someone has to mediate and evil because both employer and employees cannot both win in disputes so HR will always be the bad guy to one or other.

As you say, if you think it's bad with HR then try working in a place without!

I used to work for a fairly large company where the HR Manager was an old school, salt of the earth character. His approach to HR consisted of walking around the site chatting with everyone. At his retirement presentation he said 50% of his job had been trying to convince the employees he was on their side and the other 50% had been trying to convince the management he was on their side. He didn't confess whose side he was on but he was a company man through and through so we knew, and understood, where his loyalties were. Still a top guy and always open to discuss and mediate in difficult situations.

Definitely agree with you that some form of HR is better than none. I also worked for a family company where HR was the responsibility of the general manager/owner who was a tyrant.

Fear this has become a bit of a pile on on D.A.F.C.

Can we maybe lay off him a bit.

Reading between the lines a bit here, I think his issue is that he's just really apprehensive about leaving. Not a criticism and something many of us will have experienced.

It can be daunting to make such a big change. It sounds like he's had a lot of confidence in this area beaten out of him and that can really make you doubt yourself and make you think that a lot of job applications aren't for you, and that you'll wait for the next one because it will suit you more and so on until it's 3 years later and you're in the exact same place.

There's no easy solution to that. You just have to do it or get busy wasting your life.

Ok, asking for advice.

Have got a serious grievance against promotion and interview process that's been going back five years now.
I know that I need to leave but its something that needs talked about.
Upcoming appraisal and I've mentioned what happened in it.
