Our department had our Christmas lunch on Friday, I declined as they are usually quite civilised events, staff were given a token for one alcoholic drink, certainly not like the drunken shit fests that are a Scottish works outing.  After declining I got the usual 'well you will have to work your normal shift it you are not going' The majority of my colleagues left for the lunch at 12.30, I left the office at 12.35....

I skipped my works Christmas party this year.  Last year it was at a hotel in Aberdeen and it was just bring a party to a party and everybody had a great time.  Food was alright but there was a decent range of drinks so everybody was happy.  

This year?  A masquerade ball.  Instead of the usual 50 or so going it was down to just over 15.  By 11pm there was only 5 people left. Can't beat paying £40 for a Christmas Party before paying extra for fancy masks and then leaving after 3 hours. Merry Christmas!

A resounding victory for the going out on the town option wasn't what the "social committee" had expected and thus they threw the toys out of the pram and cancelled Christmas.

Which one, there are two Apex Hotels in the Grassmarket which confused me when I went there once for a work conference.

I used to like  the Christmas buffet in my part of my last office.

The management grades - line managers, specialist decision makers and our manager - all chipped in money. The EOs put in £20 a head. The HEO put in £60. We got around £220.

I drove up to Costco with a couple of the other EOs and we bought in food for all of our staff. Ordered some of the big pizzas, bought their trays of sandwiches, salad bowls, cooked meat platters, cakes  etc. The staff cleared a space in our bit of the office and made sure there was room for us coming back to lay the food out. Closed down the sections for an hour and just relaxed and had a bit of scran . Fed about 65 people without coming close to running out of food.

It meant that people who perhaps wouldn't have gone to an organised night out still felt like they were getting something.  Anybody who wanted to go out afterwards could finish a wee bit earlier that day and go out to the pub having filled themselves at lunch time.

Worked really well for us and staff always enjoyed it.

Masquerade Ball / Murder Mystery Night / That Glamping do / Fancy dress - These are only every organised by out one night a year arseholes that watch to much 'reality' TV and think that is how Scottish pubs works too. Just f**k off and lets have a beer, and if it helps you feel better about it I can have some food stomach-lining before a laugh and a drink.

Anything that has to be dressed up as something stupid won't be 'amaze-balls', 'a right laugh', 'epic' or any other twat phrase you have to offer.

Finish early and meal at Spanish Tapas place and drink till you can't drink any more on a pub crawl paid for by work this year is the format,

based on previous formats of, finish early, eat and drink, then drink on a wander round some pubs paid for by the work like previous years.

Only thing that changes is meal venue. Last year was Soul, year before was Amicus Apple.

Don't suppose there is space for one more?   Which Spanish place? Cafe Andaluz?

They normally have good nights out here and it's the same person who organised it this year.  Who really wants to dress up with a stupid mask at a Christmas party?  Relax, have a drink and have a laugh.  No need to try and be the most flamboyantly dressed person!  Last year for about a week after the Christmas party people were laughing and joking about the night - yesterday there was barely a mention of Friday's night out.

I guess I’m in the fortunate position that I dont have to pay for my Xmas night out, it’s always covered by the company, but if it wasn’t I don’t think I’d ever bother going tbh. I usually leave when the free bar shuts down about 10ish anyway, by that time I’ve had about 12 hours worth of drink and call it a night. [emoji23]

Did Revolución de Cuba  for the half year one.  Always somewhere central, plenty of booze, pubs after for drinks, including Dusk for cocktails as the boss likes there

The best Christmas night out I've had was actually at the Foundry.  Dirt cheap drink and we had the section on the left all to ourselves.  Highlights of the night included the area manager doing a flaming shot

The whole point of a Christmas Night Out is that its a night out, Having it in the office defeats the purpose and the thought of the people I work with fingering a buffet and then putting it back gives me a sick feeling at the back of my throat. Cant think of anything worse than having it in the actual office.
