Work colleagues

Recommended Posts

I used to work for BT and the building had a little showroom where people could pay their phone bills. One evening a woman turned up after it had shut so she asked the doorman if she could pay it to him. He took the money and simply pocketed it. Next thing is the woman complaining when she got a red reminder - explained she had paid it to the doorman. He admitted it when asked and was sacked on the spot.

OT - in another BT building I worked at, the doorman was Pat Stanton.

Was there any evidence of him doing this on CCTV or the like? He should've just kept his trap shut.  Who the f**k hands over cash to a doorman.

If there’s anyone on here who would go about murdering their work colleagues just for a hobby then you already know who my moneys on.

Is it you?

Regarding dishonestly and sackings, my friend worked for a large company that had on their website a little used company shop where you could buy tat with the company logo on it,using your staff card account, which was used for canteen money etc.  Staff could transfer money to and from their staff cards to buy things.  It turned out that there was a bit of a flaw in the code of the shop because when you purchased one item, a teddy bear,  rather than deducting the cost from your account it credited you with the amount.  Word got around the office and people starting piling in orders for dozens of teddy bears and then immediately withdrawing the money.  The scam was quickly identified though, presumably when they realised there were hundreds of orders for stupid stuffed teddies.  All those who piled in were sacked.

Presumably the woman was able to describe him so they knew she had actually been there. As to keeping his trap shut, tell him that.

I've seen an increase in weirdos brushing their teeth in the work toilets*.  Is this standard practice now?

*in case there was any doubt, I mean the sinks, not the toilet bowl itself.

Fairly standard practice in here, though I find it odd. Especially when you are in a cubicle squeezing out a post lunchtime shite and all you can hear is someone brushing away.

FWIW, I'm a 3 times a day man with brushing. Post breakfast, when I get home(Generally eat dinner on the train home) and pre bedtime. I just can't bring myself to brush in work though.

How people can be so thick as to think the company won’t notice, and subsequently sack them for theft, really baffles me in cases like this.

I worked in a sports shop years ago. A guy was left in the back by himself to do some tidying up while we were all out on the shop floor. Later someone noticed he was wearing brand new trainers that weren’t even on sale in the shop yet. The manager checked the bins in the back and found the empty shoebox and the guys old trainers. Needless to say, he was sacked.

In another previous job the woman who did the payroll got sacked for giving herself an unauthorised pay increase.  Her defence seemed to be that the previous owner of the company gave everyone pay rises just before he sold the company. She claimed she hadn’t got round to putting her own pay rise through so did it recently.

This argument fell down as she had put through everyone else’s pay increase at the time and the guy had sold the company nearly 2 years previously. We only found out the story because the group heads of HR and legal were down for a meeting, and one of them left their notes in the kitchen where one of my colleagues read them.

The first part above has reminded me of a story my mate told me. His work colleague got sacked not long ago. They cleared stuff out my garden in the past so I knew who the guy was.

Him: 'John' has been sacked.

Me: You're kidding?! What for?

Him: He stole some work boots.

Me: Eh? But if they were work boots, surely he...

Him: They wereny his size.

I couldn't stop laughing. Dozy b*****d.

I hate managing staff. General rule, pretty much everywhere, is if you work Christmas ye get New Year aff? Right?

Lassie here wanted New Year aff, happy to work Christmas, fine nae bother. This was back in January she asked. In between times other members of staff take Christmas aff. She asks me today if she can cancel her holidays for New Year and take them in October. Nae bother. So I redo the Christmas/New Year rota and now she's raging she's down as working for Christmas AND New Year. She expected me to give her Christmas aff because she's no longer working New Year. Explaining to her that everyone else is on holiday and out of the country is not helping.

She's away to upper management about it now.

I thought I'd cracked it doing specialist decision making for the past 3 years. No staff. I'm currently filling in for a manager who is absent and it reminded me why I hated team leading/staff managing.

I previously had to try to do the Christmas/NY rota in work. If senior management are ok with the odd day here and there where we're a little over our quota then you can get a lot of good will by trying to get everybody who wants it at least some time off. When they start to micro manage and get down to arguing over staff cover to  the level of morning/afternoon availability then it's a nightmare.

24th/31st being a Monday is another problem as it means people being off the weekend, in for one day, off for 2 days and then in Thursday and Friday.

Mid-1990s, working for a company whose works team recently extended Gerrard's winless away run in the league campaign.

Large nearly autonomous project office, expenses processed through that office instead of through the shared cash office that did it for other projects.

The project office manager used to collate all individual expenses forms, presumably liaise in some way with the cash office, then reimburse people a day or two later. The standard system required receipts for all spend, in principle; but it was accepted that you couldn't always easily get receipts, and so we were allowed something like 15% unreceipted expenses. Not really a problem, as we still had to note the item, such as "Evening meal, 22/4/94" and mark the line as "Unreceipted". Very little scope for abuse on the individual level, and no one really tried.

Project office manager was silently dismissed, no official action taken but advised of the case against her and all parties agreed to the parting. Her embezzlement was both bold and inventive, and went like this.

1. Collate receipts from several individuals, for processing.

2. Re-write the receipts "neatly" and pre-check them, as a favour to the central cash office.

3. Change some items from having a referenced receipt to being "Unreceipted", taking expenses forms from (say) an average of 5% unreceipted to an average of 10% unreceipted.

4. Collect the (now unused) receipts.

5. Write some brand new expenses forms in the names of people who weren't away, generally receipted up to (from memory, although this seems like a flaw) 100%.

6. Submit the fake forms with real receipts to the cash office.

7. Pocket cash in the amount of the skimmed receipts.

We've just been informed of our wage rise. Everyone gets a 3% increase with the exception of those workers who are on £7.90 an hour, who will receive a 3.5% increase.  This is the company trying to bring the lowest paid workers up to the real living wage. We now have 3%ers complaining that the lowest paid are receiving more. Yip. You have grown men and women, some nearing pension age, complaining that a handful of worker will be receiving an extra 4p per hour. Scum, the lot of them.

Lovely girl I work with, her father died last night (inoperable brain tumour). She is from the Philippines, her father requested (before death obviously), that he was cremated immediately after death - it actually happened within 8 hours, to save his daughter the cost of flying home for a funeral. That may sound savage as she didn’t get the chance of a final farewell etc, but probably best in the long run. Anyway, I got this message from her just after midnight last night. I know it has religious overtones, but as the Philippines is deeply religious I can understand.
Anyway, this thread is mainly about shite work colleagues - this girl is one of the best. Message below.

Hi buddy. My dad's suffering and pain are finally over. He is now home with Jesus. It was a very peaceful exit, he just had his snacks earlier, leaned his head and went to the best rest he deserves.

Thanks for being part of that journey. My family is so blessed by the help you gave before, and the support you constantly gave me.

Take care. [emoji4]
