The auld(er) farts will know better, but wasn't Lulu's version of The Man Who Sold the World the original? I thought Bowie had given it to her, and recorded his own later.

I figure the popularity of Nirvana's cover is mainly down to it being the first recording of a terrific song that a generation had heard; generally people prefer the one that they're introduced to. I'll take Lulu's version, for what little that's worth.

I've just put this in the Chinese Whispers thread; David Bowie's cover of I'm waiting for the Man is better than the original by The Velvet Underground IMO.
