Scottish Cup 2018-19 qualifying

Newly added to the list of tournaments whose winners enter the Scottish Cup is the South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners' Shield; effectively a Supercup facing off the two winners of the non-members cups of the EOS & SOS leagues. It provides a cup route in the way the Junior Cup has for 10yrs.

With these non-members cups now drawn the first flickering of qualifying for 2018-19 is:

Alex Jack Cup

First Round

Tweedmouth Rangers v Heriot-Watt University
Ormiston v Peebles Rovers
Tynecastle v Eyemouth Utd

Semi-Finals
Tweedmouth Rangers / Heriot-Watt University v Leith Athletic
Tynecastle / Eyemouth Utd v Ormiston / Peebles Rovers

Southern Alternate Alba Cup

First Round

Creetown v Upper Annandale
Dumfries YMCA v Nithsdale Wanderers

Second Round
Lochar Thistle v Creetown / Upper Annandale
Dumfries YMCA / Nithsdale Wanderers v Mid Annandale
Abbey Vale v Bonnyton Thistle
Heston Rovers v Lochmaben

Shame for Lothian HV to not be able to retain the cup as if Kelty win the league they'll not be able to qualify for the Scottish Cup through this

I presume that the qualifiers for the Scottish cup don't get in its played on Scottish Cup weekends?

Opens it up for Tynecastle and Leith and maybe Lochar from the South who sound like they are strengthening their squad

As you say it is held on the same weekends as the Scottish Cup - for obvious reasons - which precludes the Scottish Cup qualifiers from participating. Alex Jack Cup has been on the go for 30 years... Southern Alternate Cup has been introduced as a mirror tournament to feed the SESCW Shield.

In practice that's also a good thing... No club will be able to win the Shield multiple times running, ensuring a different club should qualify each year, spreading the opportunity around.

One concern with these qualifying places - in Juniors and Seniors - is that a club wins its league; goes a few rounds in the Scottish Cup; make a 5 figure sum; and uses that money to reinforce its dominance and win league again.

It's possible someone unlicensed will win both the Shield and their league, or win the Shield and get licensed mid-season, but that's reasonably unlikely IMO.

Kelty are not SFA members at the moment, is there any reason why they aren't in the Alex Jack cup other than the fact they might be getting their licence in August?

They are east super league champions so have got a place through that

This - they qualified by winning East Juniors before joining EOSL.

Formally-speaking the phrase "non members cup" is no longer strictly accurate - "not playing in the Scottish Cup cup" would be precise.

For completeness it's worth saying that the other qualifying routes remain as previously - by winning the EOS League; SOS League; North Juniors; East Juniors; West Juniors; or the Junior Cup; or the Amateur Cup. If a licensed club win any of them (which is quite possible in EOS and SOS but unlikely in Juniors beyond BoD or Linlithgow) no runners-up qualify instead.

Always a good chance of that happening, part and parcel of football. You can say EK's good cup run and game v Celtic helped propel them to winning last seasons LL.

With the mighty Berwick hosing QotS in the SPFL Challenge Cup R2 on Sep 2nd the Tweedmouth v Heriot-Watt game is also Saturday coming like Tynecastle-Eyemouth says EOSL website. So 2 of 3 ties actually 1 week early.

For the most part the 'big beasts' among the non-membership made it through in each competition:

Southern Alternate Alba Cup R2
Abbey Vale 1-4 Bonnyton Thistle
Lochar Thistle 1-3 Upper Annandale
Heston Rovers 4-3 Lochmaben (aet, FT 3-3)
Nithsdale Wanderers 2-3 Mid Annandale

Alex Jack Cup R1
Ormiston 0-3 Peebles Rovers

This leaves SFs of the respective cups (Sep 23rd except Tynecastle 1 week later):

Southern Alternate Alba Cup SFs
Bonnyton Thistle, Heston Rovers, Mid Annandale, Upper Annandale

Alex Jack Cup SFs
Heriot-Watt University v Leith Athletic
Tynecastle v Peebles Rovers

Mid Annandale comfortably dispatched Heston Rovers 4-1 tonight to secure their place in the Southern Alternate Alba Cup Final.

Their rivals Upper Annandale will try to set-up a derby final, when they travel to Bonnyton tomorrow afternoon.

Who won the Spartans game tonight?
