Junior football, what is the future?

^^^Bizarre stuff that this small clique of posters (not including patriot1, andrew21 and GordonS in that obviously) who have spent years deriding the SJFA on here don't seem to grasp that it is now finally on its last legs as a national association and that the EoS will almost certainly be steering any new members towards its own cup competitions and the SCC rather than encouraging any of its clubs to participate in the SJC given the havoc that could lead to in fixture list terms. Given the backdrop of 38 league games for the WoS premier next season and the talk of a new west cup in addition to the SCC it's far from certain that the necessary fixture dates will be forthcoming in a WoS context, so the SJC could easily be Tayport and northwards only next season.

It's not bizarre because you've still not grasped it. The EoSFL aren't doing anything. They're just going about their business.

The EoS aren't steering any club away from the SJFA and it's not their job to encourage clubs to stay in the SJFA. That's the SJFA's job.

Correct.  The EoSL is not involved in the future of junior clubs, either remaining or not remaining, as members of the SJFA.

The north of Tayside juniors, may or may not decide to retain SJFA membership (and to continue to participate in the Junior Cup), as they enter the proposed Midland (senior) league for 2021/22. This will become clearer, once the new league holds its first AGM.

The East Region Juniors, who are joining the EoSL, may or may not retain membership of the SJFA, for 2021/22, but this is not something which the EoSL will try to prevent.

The Midland league appears to be coming under the control of the SJFA so all teams in it next season will still be members.

Has there been any indication from any of the WL teams that they will be continuing their membership of the SJFA?

I think Burnieman posted something a few weeks back speculating about WL clubs potentially retaining membership in an EoS context and not having to move to the WoS to be able to do that in pyramd terms but he was quickly corrected by several posters with links to WoS clubs who pointed out that this wouldn't actually possible in an EoS context as things stand at the moment. Other than that there has been nothing along those lines in any of the twitter, website or facebook statements AFAIR.

Bizarre that some of the most anti-SJFA posters on here suddenly seem to be cheerleading its continued existance. Would be good to see the SJC resurrected again in my opinion now that the dust has settled a bit in pyramid terms (odds on the same posse of posters would be arguing vociferously to the contrary if that became a live issue though) but as far as I can see the LL, EoS and WoS are gung ho about the SCC so sadly it looks like its days may already be over south of Tayport.

The SJC doesn't need "resurrected", it still exists and will be played for in season 2021-22, albeit with fewer teams than it used to have.

Talks are underway, though, concerning an all-encompassing Scottish Cup for all teams from tier 5 down. It is not imminent, but may not be too far away given the quick development of the pyramid in the Highland League area.

It arguably does when viewed from the perspective of former SJFA members in the EoS and LL who now have a South rather than a Scottish competition as their flagship cup tournament and no viable way back into the SJFA (only open to east and north region clubs plus WoS as currently constituted). Good to hear there are active negotiations on an all-encompassing sub-SPFL national cup for the semi-professional level.

That would be good, the one thing I'd miss if west teams leave the SJFA is our trips over there in the SJC, I've had some very enjoyable trips that way in the last few seasons.

Pointing out that the SJFA can open up their membership to non-Junior leagues doesn't count as cheerleading. If anything it highlights the hypocrisy of doing so last year for the West alone. Which was said at the time.

Now that the West have gone Senior, leaving few juniors behind - couldn't the Amateur and SJC be merged for clubs at lower levels ? Only an idea. Guessing clubs would enter either Amateur/Junior ora Senior Cup, or maybe just get rid of the terminology used ? Just glad that all clubs survive and manage to play football, at whatever levels.

Apart from organising the Junior Cup, what purpose does the SJFA now serve?

None whatsoever and it's far from clear that a Midlands & Grampian Leagues plus some of the WoS clubs cup competition has any long term future at this point. It will be interesting to see how many WoS clubs renew their SJFA membership and how many decide they would prefer to decongest an otherwise already very busy fixture list.

Maybe now's the time for the SJFA to call it a day and let the SFA administer the remaining members that are in what are all now effectively Senior leagues. The Junior Cup was big in its day but to try and continue with it in its highly truncated state..?

As others have said the fixture calendar is very full and unless an already existing competition is mothballed I can't see any future for it.

It's ironic that the full record of the competition has been at last published on its apparent deathbed...

Outside looking in you would think so. However, the North & what will be the Midlands still look tied to the SJFA's apron strings not willing to move on. Going by what was said in the blurb above the SJFA themselves are clinging on to the idea they'll still have the current 54 members in the WoSFL next season, all while losing members elsewhere.

  • 3 weeks later...

Think it's time to move ahead and call it professionals and amateurs, the Juniors gave me my  first look at Scottish non league, brilliant clubs , grounds, and fans. These clubs have decided to move upwards with ground improvements etc, and deserve our support more than ever.  Maybe the remaining (junior) clubs could play in revamped Scottish Cup preliminary rounds, rather than just the licensed clubs. Only an idea.
