San Starko Rover
1 hour ago, GordonS said: And that would be relevant if they were setting up a South West Scotland League. But it's a West of Scotland League, which means it doesn't cover Kirkcudbright any more than it covers Fort William. Besides, I wouldn't say Moffat, Lockerbie, Lochmaben, Dumfries of New Abbey are in the South West of Scotland anyway. Dumfries is further east than Falkirk while Lockerbie is as far east as Edinburgh airport. You're not wrong mate but then Liverpool is further east than Edinburgh but you'd hardly count Edinburgh as being West would you? It's all fairly academic anyway as many have pointed out this is a debate for another time. Personally I think we need two feeders to the (LL) East and West but at the moment we'll have three which is a first world problem at best. Others are free to disagree with my opinion as they have. I'm looking forward to seeing the new WOS league up and running (god knows when) and i'm interested to see how the SJC evolves through the transition period. It'll also be interesting to see how many licenced clubs we have in the next few years. I missed our trip to Linlithgow Rose but would love an away day to some of the former Juniors. I hope the remaining East Juniors decide to join the pyramid but it has to be their decision no one should be forced.
craigkillie
I think the Highland League should change its name because Lossiemouth is actually south of Orkney.
Ray Patterson
Hopefully, in years to come the Junior Cup can become a cup for all teams in the pyramid outside the Professional* Game: i.e. Tier 6 and below. Similar to the FA Trophy in England. *I know junior clubs and EoS clubs are paying wages but Tier 5 and above is what the SFA call "Professional".
Robert James
4 hours ago, Doonhamer1969 said: I entirely agree . As I said , SoS geography shouldn't go against it . I apologise if it seems I was having a go at the NCL. The main points were that if it can be at Tier 6 for geographical reasons , which I have absolutely no objection to , so can the SoS, and that the rush that some on here advocate to demote the SoS appears hypocritical given the relative strengths of the SoS and NCL. Apology accepted, thank you. The NCL was formed in 1896, and has survived despite adverse weather conditions, and its geographic remoteness, which has not been helped historically, by poor roads. The league has had a close affinity with the Highland League, as the "Reserve XI's" of the three Inverness clubs (Caley, Thistle, & Clach), plus Fort William, Nairn Co, Lossiemouth, and several others, have all played in the North Caledonian League from time to time, although there haven't been any in recent seasons. After a few difficult years when membership was lower, the NCL is now on the up, with 9 league clubs in 2019/20, plus Lewis & Harris FC and Nairn County's Development XI, participating in some of its league cup competitions. In addition, 4 new clubs have applied to join the league for 2020/21 (see article in the Inverness Courier). The NCL's territory covers the north & west Highlands, the city of Inverness, and the islands of Orkney and the Western Isles (+ occasionally the Shetland Isles for cup competitions). There is no 'boundary' overlap problems with the North Region's Junior clubs, as none of them are located in these areas, thereby facilitating geographical integrity. If the NCL and also the NRJFA Juniors, join the pyramid, there would need to be two separate 'feeder' leagues, with a play-off, if the 2 champion clubs were both licensed. PS : there are highlights of the Football Times Cup Final (played on 18th January 2020), on the NCL website : Golspie Sutherland 2 St Duthus (Tain) 3. A very competitive match, and some very good goals. Worth a look. . Edited April 3, 2020 by Robert James typo error

Edinburgh is west of Valencia too, but we're talking about Scotland. The South of Scotland isn't really part of the east or west of Scotland, culturally or geographically. The NCL is a good analogy, because you wouldn't say Helmsdale is part of the east or west of Scotland, though it's technically on the east coast. It's just the north.
EdinburghBlue
The Mission of the SoSFL is "To Develop, Foster, Co-Ordinate and Sustain Association Football at the Club and League level throughout South West Scotland". One of its objectives is "To play and promote Association Football in the South of Scotland." There is no mention of Dumfries or Galloway in its constitution. The constitution doesn’t define either "south" or "south west." However, any common sense definition clearly extends beyond Galloway and Dumfries. Personally I think the best outcome would be to incorporate the SoSL into the new West, with probably most of the South teams eventually finding their place towards the bottom of the structure, and probably in regionalised leagues that stretch NS rather than EW, given longer east-west travel times. But no one can doubt given the SoSL constitution that that league could have insisted that most aspiring WoSL teams wanting access to the pyramid should have joined them. They are making a sacrifice for the greater good.

LongTimeLurker
So given there are almost certainly some undeclared applicants (it's hard to believe that Hurlford and St Roch's won't apply, for example) and there are only 7 Ayrshire and 7 Central clubs left, it's difficult to see how a viable rump WRSJFA or old school Ayrshire and Central setup could emerge at this point.
