Don't know full detail, but...........the original scan and the one in Manchester (for Oz team) both came back with the specialist saying it was a slight meniscus tear. This is apparently common in players and can sometimes clear up itself, although you can have a bit shaved off to speed up recovery. So he went over in the hope it would sort itself out. Once MB failed the fitness tests in Qatar, he went into the (excellent) facility there to have the meniscus shaved. When the doc looked inside the knee, he saw the ACL rupture - it hadn't "gone" at that point, but they made the decision to fix it there and then.
