The mad competitive West Super Division One thread 2017-2018

Recommended Posts

Just our luck I'm afraid. At the start of the season I looked at the 40-point benchmark from previous seasons and thought "yes, no problem we can do that". We did and more, but this time it wasn't enough.

That's football though, and we just have to accept it and prepare for next season in the new "Championship" (still ridiculous names for the leagues below the top one, by the way).

Three straight up and three straight down out of 16 teams, instead of (prior to this season) two straight up and a play-off and four straight down out of only 14 teams. It'll be interesting to see how that affects the dynamic of what has been (until now) the most competitive league in Scotland.
Tbh after getting 48 points and coming 4th last year, we always had a target of 50 points minimum this year. With so many promotion spots up for grabs we always felt it was going to be more competitive than ever.

Yeh, that's a fair point. We got 45 points last year and finished 5th (after being top going into our last game), this season 43 points and we'll finish 7th or 8th.

The incentive of potentially 6 teams going up certainly raised the bar, and unfortunately we went backwards very very slightly. Last season we didn't score enough goals which cost us promotion with too many draws. This season we solved that problem with Smith, McKay and Gormley banging them in, but we lost way too many goals (46) and never really replaced Ryan Docherty who was a huge loss for us.

From my conversations with the gaffer I'm confident he knows where we need to strengthen and, if he gets what he wants, then we'll certainly be contenders next season.

It's a hard one to pin down exactly why there is such a big difference where 40 points or so would get you in previous seasons compared to this one. It's very noticeable though that there is a big points gap from 8th to 9th this season which isn't apparent in others, and also the bottom 2 are well behind the rest. Looks like the top 8 have all had a big gain in points taken from the bottom 6, and ultimately it will be the teams that haven't fully capitalised on that that will most likely be missing out on promotion and playoff spots.

Our downfall last season was our away form, and Glencairn and Cumbernauld have suffered this year from that, Glens losing 6/13 and United 7/13 on their travels. both sides had home records equal to or better than Meadow and Troon.

Troon were unbeaten away from home all season, can't be many teams to have managed that in this division over the years.

We lost 7 but won the other 6 so a return of 18 points away from home would be acceptable, our home form at the start of the season was the problem 2 points from 12,we have won our last 6 home league games and finish with Largs on Sunday. Looking forward to this game hopefully get a decent crowd,1pm KO.

So one last game in the division as Largs travel to Cumbernauld on Sunday knowing a win sends them to the Premier at Meadows expense. Cumbernauld will want to spoil any party and also finish on a high

Predictions?

There won't be a Super League Division One next season.

So it’s Arthurlie v Meadow and Girvan v Troon.

Would be nice to know when they’re being played.

Girvan Troon is Weds And Friday... so Troon were told last week

That is what our Secretary was told by SR...but then he scheduled Girvan v Talbot the next day for this coming Wednesday.

So, the earliest Girvan are available would be Friday or Saturday this week. My guess would be next week.

But it would be nice to know for sure!

So 3 out of the 4 autos went to teams who play on plastic , massive advantage for them and no sure it’s entirely fair but well done to them all and just glad we don’t have to play on those parks next season

Aye, they were a huge advantage to Largs and ourselves when we were relegated in the last 2 years. Surely it's up to every team to try and get an advantage from the pitch they play half their league games on?

I'm sure Petershills record was equally good away from home if not better. That includes playing on some excellent grass parks, some dry bumpy parks and muddy parks as yours was when we won 3-2 early in the season.

Won 10, drew 2 at home, won 9 and drew 2 away. We have had seasons where we took more points away than we did at home.
