The St. Mirren FC 2022/23 thread

We were very poor against the fakes but so were they. We could have been 1 up before two mistakes by Dunne and Henderson gave them a two goal lead. After that it was pretty much one way traffic, although it was toothless, with them getting a very late pen on a breakaway. Greive made a huge difference when he came on and should have been on sooner. The fakes were worthy of their victory as they took their chances and didn't make the two stupid mistakes that we did. But the scoreline flattered them and had we got one back we had 15 mins and the momentum to get a draw. They deserved their win but there was little between two poor team performances on the day.

The bench also makes a huge difference. Tait can cover both sides without losing much. Our strikers can run themselves into the ground knowing they won't have to play the full 90, we can move to one up with a 10 easily with Kiltie. That's not even mentioning quality players like Shaughnessy and Gogic ready to step in. It's a much better squad than last season.

Something I really liked yesterday was the negligible effect the loss of both Strain and Tanser had on our play. We were forced into 3 changes in position across that back 5 with more than 20 minutes still to play:

Strain-Fraser-Gallagher-Dunne-Tanser

Fraser-Gogic-Gallagher-Dunn-Tait

The last thing you want is that kind of disruption to your defence when trying to hold onto a lead against Celtic. However, our depth of squad coupled with how well-drilled the players are meant that we could cruise to the final whistle.

My first game (as a 5-y-0) - lifted over the turnstyle, absolutely no memories other than the score other than the goal was scored by Hugh GilSHAN. @Arch Stanton

Second in the league!  St Mirren table(s) on 1968-11-16 (fitbastats.com)

I remember that Hughie Gilshan goal Scored in the fog Half the ground didn’t see it! Featured on the cover of programmes for a few weeks The other notable point about that game was Rangers new goal machine Colin Stein failed to score for the first time in a number of games

ETA Oops just noticed the Captain has posted that very photo!

Some change from last season when we would be starting games with only 4 or 5 players on the bench, 2 of them goalkeepers.

Second top indeed!

Little wonder you can’t remember anything. Looking at the fog it’s unlikely anyone else can either!

What a season that was we were 1 point behind Celtic flying in the league. Cold fogey November Hugh Gilshan wins the game for Saints.. We had a great team back then Murray,  Connell , Blair,  Kane Pinkerton who loved taking players on.  Sadly the last quarter of that season we had many injuries dropping points slipping down the table to 11th.

Yes. Equally good players in the waiting if we lose a player through injury, suspension or tiredness as the game goes on. When Tait came on, I thought this is a great option to have on the bench at this moment in the game and he fits in perfectly and gets up and down the park.

Something I really admired about our tactics, was that we kept our shape, started with 2 upfront and really only dropped to one off the striker (Kiltie) late on, still with the intention of getting forward. Under Goodwin, we would start with a negative formation against Celtic and Rangers and hope that we see a game out late enough to change the shape late on to try and snatch a point or a win. Well done Robinson for having belief and being brave.

Normally the international break is historically the time our players get a bit of time off.

By my reckoning, we've had 5 players in the last 2 seasons receive their first senior international call ups whilst St. Mirren players. (The Aussie/NZ lads, McGrath and Ronan) That's some going for a club where in my younger days, if an ex-international showed up it was a big deal, never mind being a club that is doing well enough to merit producing current international footballers.

If both Strain and Baccus get minutes this week - as you'd expect - that will be 7 full internationalists now in our squad and really, 5 of them are current/recent (think Carson missed out this time on NI which is a bit of a strange one really given he's on 4 clean sheets from 7 games) and the only one you'd say is well out of the reckoning for future squads is Brophy. Declan Gallagher must be working his way back into contention at this rate - he's been rock solid and you could argue has had a far better start to the season than Porteous.

That must be some sort of a record for us. 7 international caps in a St. Mirren squad at the same time?!

The most caps any player has ever won whilst a Saints player is 7 - for both Billy Thomson and Iain Munro. With Gogic and Grieve regular starters for Cyprus and NZ respectively, that long-standing record will surely fall very soon.

"We are not going to take risks with anybody, as it has been in the Nations League games," he said.

"They want to look after their bodies, although they are playing for their clubs there are one or two ongoing issues. It is the same with Trevor Carson, although he was initially named in the squad he is having to look after himself in between games.

It’s not often we will sign a current Scottish international who was under contract at his previous club for nothing.
Thanks Aberdeen, outstanding bit of business by the club 🤝

Last outfield player to be called up? I can’t think. Roy Aitken?

Craig Samson was called into a squad back around 2013. Aitken was the last to be capped whilst at St Mirren I'm sure.

Edit: Just noticed you said outfield player, so we can all ignore my post!

Other than the prestige, does the club benefit financially from having a player in the international squad?

Nope but if players are chosen for World Cup or Euro finals squads then there is a financial benefit.

Sadly since neither Strain or Baccus featured for Australia this morning it seems unlikely that they will make the WC squad.

I see Steve Clarke was at the game yesterday. Declan Gallagher can't be far off a Scotland recall.

If absoulte shite like Porteous can get in the squad, then Gallagher must be knocking at the door.

Big Dec back in to the national squad

Given his current form, and predictable injuries in the national team, this was inevitable.

To be fair, it is a double header with NZ and the second friendly coming over the weekend so they may still get some game time.
