The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread

Recommended Posts

My habit at 5pm on a Saturday is to count how many points we are off the bottom of the league.

Always think that Aberdeen and Hibs will pull away from us and we'll likely finish 6th-8th. Looking at the form of both of them though and their transfer windows, I think we're a really good shout for a European place.

Tonight and Saturday massive.

Is it true the Reid deal is off

Not sure why it wasn’t announced yesterday but as far as I’m aware he signed there yesterday afternoon.

I liked Obika when he was with us, but I'm not sure I'd be scared of him being at another club in the same league. He was fairly effective, but somewhat predictable. We've seen Goncalves come back to another team and quite a few "had the fear", but he turned out to be a waste of a wage and we needn't have worried. I think that'll be the case for Obika, not that he'd be a waste of a wage for Motherwell, but that he'll unlikely have the impact he had for us.

Onto tonight's game, I was going to pull up the team sheets to see how much has changed since then. Yet, when you look at it, we've only really lost Erhahon from that side, which you would assume will be filled with Kiltie getting a more regular start. Aberdeen, though have basically bought themselves a new back line.

Don’t see Kiltie as a replacement for Ethan.
Although they are not exactly the same type of player, Gogic is far more likely to replace Ethan than Kiltie.

Maybe if Reid has not gone then he gets more game time there, or even Taylor

Watt is the kind of player you absolutely hate when he is not playing for your team. There is no doubt he's been "mixed" at almost everywhere he's played but that half season at Well was the closed he's come to filling his potential.  We've signed him on a lone so not too much outlay, but still won't be cheap. If it works out great, if not then he won't be any worse than Irwin, Dennis etc. Best of luck to him. He could be the very thing we need to kick on to a European place, or not.

I really dislike Watt as a player, both on and off the ball. I really disliked Main as a player, both on and off the ball.

Robinson has done an absolute number on one of those, let's hope he does the same for the other. Personally the thought of a Watt/Main front pairing is like eating a shit sandwich without the decency of it being warmed up first, but I fully accept two very important things. First off, not everyone thinks like I do and will welcome Watt. Secondly, and this is probably the crux of the matter, Robinson is getting success with this formation/strategy. It makes no odds whether I like it or not, it's effective and certainly more effective than what Goodwin was doing.

Only seems right that if St Mirren take on twenty ex-Motherwell employees, they get on board with the programme a wee bit too. A player who should receive a good welcome back at the DinkyDome. Not clarting my nappy at the thought of facing him, that’s a job for Hearts fans.

If we get the Tony Watt that was at Motherwell then his signing is a masterstroke and there is no real reason to suggest Robbo won't be able to get that out of him again.

I think he plays best through the middle whereas for some reason Utd seemed to stick him out on the left. I never really understood that.

The season United signed him (when he was the top scorer in the league) he'd mostly been playing off the left for us with Van Veen as the #9. I get the impression they just stuck him out there and thought they'd get the same output.

I know you had Motherwell fans in your mentions yesterday telling you that it was Alexander who got the best out of Watt and that's certainly true in terms of goalscoring but broadly Robinson seemed to sort out his focus, conditioning, motivation and application.

He was our POTY by an absolute mile the season Robinson ended up chucking it and resigned.

He's an smashing player and in the first half of last season he dragged us through games and was a huge part of why we were 4th in the league when he fucked off to Tannadice and burned his bridges with a chunk of our support.

Is there a possibility that Reid has signed for Palace and then he returns on loan, to the end of the season?

Surely they'd want assurances that he would actually play in that case. Certainly his chances have improved with Erhahon moving on but there's no guarantee at all that he becomes a starter now.
