The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread

I’ve resigned myself to us losing Erhahon and Baccus is the near future. If they were both sold in the January window though that’s be an absolute disaster for us.

Baccus will be the big money player moving on. Strike while the iron’s hot and sell Baccus for a massively inflated World Cup fee in January and hang on to Erhahon until the summer and let him go.

You’d have to think Baccus could go for £1m/1.5m without too much drama.

Inevitable there will be a fair bit of interest in Baccus in January after his World Cup performances. For once we should be in a reasonably strong bargaining position as he's got 18 months left on his deal.

Ethan is a slightly different situation obviously with his contract expiring in the summer, but in his case even if he left as a free agent we would be due a development fee given the length of time he's been with us (unless his agent pulls the MLS trick a la John McGinn).

Going to be a case of weighing up any January bids versus what we can get in the Summer when he goes out of contract.

Losing both in January would be a massive blow but for that to happen you would assume it's because we're being heavily compensated and that in turn should mean that Robbo and Foyle would be given resources to go and get replacements.

In terms of bargaining position for a guy who, let's be honest, as soon as we saw him playing we all knew early doors wasn't going to be with us long-term, the World Cup really couldn't have gone better for us.

He could have went off with the Aussies, got 2 mins here or there and we'd have been getting the same talented player back and possibly some of the interest that comes with it (as bear in mind he still had his fanciers before the WC) and we'd have been weighing up that same old question we always ask: 'Is he worth losing for half a million quid, he only has a year left' etc. But the key difference here is that he put himself in front of a worldwide audience as a rookie against some of the best teams in the world and didn't look out of place whatsoever... those clubs who were interested before would have been willing to pay about a quarter of what we can feasibly ask for him now. We're now potentially able to ask for genuine 'can't knock that back' cash.

I'd love to keep him for the full two years, he's that good and that important to us, but sometimes if the money and interest is there then you really do need to strike when the iron is hot and our strategy in terms of budget more or less banked on something like this happening (though I'm sure not nearly as successfully).

Obviously I do not want the squad to be weaker however Gogic was excellent as defensive midfielder last season and Kiltie has been very good when played in midfield this season. And apparently we are interested in a loan move for Alfie McCalmont of Leeds who is 22 with full Caps for NI and is a defensive midfielder and has played under SR. And we will get decent cash for Baccus and/or Erhahon to bolster the squad. Not ideal mid season but not a disaster either.

Think we've already been anticipating Erhahon potentially going in January, along with trying to offload Brophy and maybe Reid (though we shouldn't be, we should be giving him game time).

Another resignation from the SMiSA board with chairman Kenny Docherty stepping down.

Eddie Devine replacing him.

That's been some amount of churn in SMiSA recently.

Should the place not have went to the young guy who was 5th in the recent members vote?

It's a little concerning the amount of recent upheaval when added to the "doom" rumour mill....it might be a decent idea for the SMiSA Board to put out a newsletter updating the membership on the current situation plus a wee piece on short, medium and long term goals to put things back on an even keel.

Look at Partick. All their directors bar one are resigning. Now that's what I call upheaval.

Hope we get better working arrangements and communications, but I'm grateful for those who are committing their time to our club. Let's keep improving on and off the park.

Either that or there should have been another vote. Or was Eddie Devine already a member of the board?

And had the chairman who had just stood down not only recently taken over from George Adam?

Edit: Had a look and Eddie was already on the board, so I guess that’s another election to replace Kenny.

Yup, Kenny took over from George on 19th October. He was already on the SMiSA board obviously and had been since 2017.

The appointment of Eddie Devine as SMISA chairman is really making me think about cancelling my membership.

All the shit stirring etc. a month or so ago seemed at the time to be pretty orchestrated. This just confirms it for me.

On a lighter note, I spotted this cigarette card during a visit to Beamish Museum today.

Cairters Corner kindly provided this info (then said it should be 20 goals).

There was a Paisley Celtic FC? I have just done a quick Google search and found very little. Is anyone able to shed some light on this - where they played, colours (presumably green is one of them), etc.

I love reading about old clubs, which sadly dissolved:

Dumbarton Harp - http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Scottish_Football_League/Dumbarton_Harp/Dumbarton_Harp.htm

Northern FC - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_F.C.

Galston FC - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galston_F.C.

and Paisley's other club:

Fascinating to read that Abercorns old stadium hosted a Scotland V Wales game.
