The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread

Recommended Posts

Clubs like us are always a bad managerial appointment away from disaster, Killie being the prime recent example of this. Under Steve Clarke they became the third best team in Scotland and he moved on to a bigger job. They messed up the succession, and three years and three expensive managerial sackings later they're throwing desperate money around to try cling on to Arbroath's coat tails in the Championship.

We did similar in 2014. The new manager will have a settled and experienced squad, most of whom are under contract next season, and we are safe from relegation. There's a really solid base to build on and I think that is why it can appeal to higher profile managers, like Lambert. We don't need a fire fighter, we need someone not to mess up what's already there and build on it if possible.

Just don't Tommy Craig it.

On a totally different note, Billy Thomson and Peter Godfrey are being inducted into the hall of fame along with John Sutton at the annual dinner in May.

Oh, and for those who had (jokingly or otherwise) being touting Dougie Imrie for the job. Yeah... maybe not.

If this ends up with Jack Ross and a healthy wad of compensation to St Mirren, you'll have done very well for yourselves. Up a substantial sum and you'd still have a better manager than Aberdeen.

Obviously you're in a considerably better position than Ross County were at the time and would probably need to go without a win for the rest of the season to end up in relegation trouble from here, but the suggestion of Paul Lambert is giving me big Owen Coyle vibes. While his decline hasn't been quite as drastic, it's a guy who once had a fantastic reputation as an up and coming manager working in the English top flight, who has since had diminishing returns to the point he's not been a success in any job for almost a decade. You could easily see that going the same way as Coyle, as he grudgingly returns to Scotland to rebuild his reputation while thinking he's too good for it and it blows up in his face and destroys his reputation for good.

TBF I think Coyle is having a great time of it in India now.

Indeed.

Imagine a club being stupid enough to appoint a manager that still has to see out six game ban..........................

He's only had a 7 game managerial career.

The fuck did he do to end up with a ban longer than the amount of games he's been a gaffer for?

It's historic betting stuff. A few other players were facing similar charges today.

I knew it was historical stuff, but that is a great stat when you think about it. Could he possibly be the only manager who has gotten a ban longer than their entire career in management?

Going forward, I’d like to see a rule brought in that clubs face a points deduction if they approach a manager from another club in the same league, we  are above Aberdeen with some winnable games ahead so disrupting us gives them an advantage and they need all the help they can get. Should only move during the window.
