The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread

There’s a rumour on Twitter about Andy Webster moving to Hearts in a coaching role, with Darren McGregor returning to Saints in a player coaching role. It’s that fun point of the season with all the nonsense rumours gaining some momentum.

I would take that.

Nice one, will give that a listen on the way home tonight.

Is McGregor not on a fairly lengthy contract at Hibs? Would have thought if he wanted to go into coaching they'd have been happy to offer him a role.

If he's coming in mainly as a coach who'll provide cover then fair enough as he hasn't played that many games in the last couple of seasons.

Think he's still got 2 years left on his Hibs contract and what you describe above is pretty much exactly the role he has at Hibs (David Gray is on an identical deal). If you wanted to sign him and play him more regularly than we have I could see him going to do that.

He has that magic quality of being a third-choice keeper who's happy to be third-choice.

To be fair, I think the club and the player hope that, after next season, he will have developed enough to be one of our top two 'keepers. When he was signed there were words to the effect that he was a long term project and had been researched as such by the goalkeeping "team".

I can see him being put out on loan, with the hope that he's first choice to whichever club he goes to. He needs to be tested every week preferably at a lower end championship club or top end 1st division club. Only that way can we see if he's suitable to make the step up to compete for the first team position.

Yeah good bit of number three business.
Peter is not ready for top flight football, but is ready to sit on the bench if Jak or Dean become unavailable.
Can’t ask for much more.

Bit surprised, I just assumed he'd have been gone but I guess he was always labelled as a project.

The lack of 'reserve' football this season has certainly hampered the likes of guys like Urminsky to get the experience we brought him over for. Hopefully that will be changing next season and he can get regular minutes playing at some level.

New contract for Shaughnessy: https://www.stmirren.com/all-news/3989-joe-shaughnessy-signs-two-year-deal

Had forgotten it was only an option for the second year, rather than a two year contract. Good to get him signed up.

Outstanding news. Prone to the odd lapse but absolutely no doubting his overall quality and leadership.

Well happy with this.
