i seem to be the draw specialist on opening game threads so time to let someone else do it!

We will lose the Motherwell game. It's my birthday and last time we won on that date was before I was born!

Appropriate opposition for May 16.

By then some players will have played their last game for us , others will know they're not getting a new contract,  and even some we wish to keep may have intimated that they're moving on , and the likes of Reid will be getting game time.

The prospect of Reid (or others) getting game time is likely to be the only thing piquing my interest, aside from the cup games.

(I'm all talk: I have said this tonnes of times this season and still get all excited when the line-ups are announced.)

Not sure whether or not it is an advantage that we have nothing much to play for. The players aren't under any pressure, but then again we're going to be up against teams fighting for their lives...

We won't have to deal with two OF games. Traditionally that was worth a decent wedge in home gates, but without fans that's negated, also with the title race over that would be less of the case. You also feel that their will be more opportunity to give game time to the younger players.

All in all, the only thing we've lost out on is a bit of cash, but you could argue our LC performance offset that - and we've got the SC to maybe generate some money from, too.

Wonder why there has been no news to the new contracts offers a couple of weeks ago. Doyle-Hays  i expect to return down south.  According to press reports Jamie McGrath is attracting attention from down south.  Marcus Fraser is another we are trying to tie down am I right in saying his contract is up at the end of the season.  Would love him to stay but can see the likes of Hibs , Aberdeen coming in for him. At least we have a basis of 15 players signed up for next season. Suppose we need to realise we are a stepping stone to bigger things for players.

I think we have to be at the point where we need JDH to shit or get off the pot - if he doesn't want the offer then we need to start making other approaches. Wouldn't surprise me if he's already confirmed internally that he's not staying, tbh.

I'd get Polworth in instead. Out of contract and I'd imagine Well won't be too fussed to see him leave.

If it is the case he has confirmed he's leaving, then as good as he is, he should be on the bench for the rest of the season. Give the players games who will be here best season. At least we can always rely on the jambos to keep our spirits up.

They're completely different players though?

Unless you want a change in set up it wouldn't be a good swap at all, IMO.

There's still prize money at stake and a desire to finish higher than last season, so until there's nothing left to lose let's put out our strongest team - but yeah I see no reason not to give him notice "It's make your mind up time".

PS - Thanx to Hearts for picking up the mantle of the most embarrassing result in Scottish Football - no doubt we'll take it back one of these days...

I strongly want a change in set-up, despite various promises I made to myself after we won at Parkhead. JDH hasn't actually been great for us since he came back from his injury and, as @djchapsticks has pointed out several times, he's being mis-used in the middle anyway.

Difficult to say what the problem actually is with JDH - could be injury, could be the system, could be a mental thing (the public announcement that he was about to sign a long deal was clearly a huge miss-step by Goodwin). He remains our best option in there but a whole load of things haven't been clicking for us across the team, of which he is one.

Point taken re them not being like-for-like; I more meant just 'here's something else we could do with the money'.

What sort of player is JDH? No doubt RandomGuy will have him profiled and typed already, but from a St Mirren point of view you're saying he's being misused, why is that?

I'd be happy leaving him in the side, I just think there's a zero chance he's still with us next season. He's always been very clear about wanting to get a 'bigger' move so I have no ill feelings towards him, and we came within goal difference of getting top six, so he's more than played his part. His arrival was certainly the catalyst for the spell of form that turned our season around after a frankly dogshit start.

All that said, I very much want to see Reid getting lots of game time before the end of the season so I'm hoping we see some more of him.

He's a classy centre mid. He has a tremendous range of passing and an eye for a pass through opposition defences.

Aside from the first 7 or 8 games he played for us though, he's been moved further and further back in the pitch to point where he now just hovers in front of the back 3 or 4 and moves the ball short distances sideways.

He's also nothing like a natural spoiler in terms of his style so it's bizarre that he's being asked to play there and destroy other team's attacks rather than a focal point who will contribute to creating our own attacks.

We play a 3-5-2 and he's been given a cautious 'sitting' role, usually alongside Erhahon. The sense is that JDH is potentially much more dynamic than that, and that he could play a far more creative role.

The problem is, all of our midfielders kinda fit that description. Flynn, Erhahon, McPherson, McGrath can all play the deeper role, and all have done for us, but they all seem more at home in more advanced positions.

Yep agree with this. Most of our midfielders are very similar type players. We don't really have a midfielder who can drive forward with the ball.

Not on Saturday he didn't. Very off the boil, along with several others. We'll never see the data, but I'd be fascinated to find out exactly how knackered our players are. Like, are they basically so fucked that two weeks off wasn't even going to touch the sides in terms of the recovery they needed? It just felt like some of the bread and butter stuff we were trying simply wasn't coming off.

I have every top flight CM profiled tbh, but I'm not sure anyone really cares so it's just sort of sitting there doing nothing while I figure out it's use.
