The St. Mirren FC 2023/24 thread

Seems to be Goodwin's MO just now.

Tait: Good player, lots of experience, Motherwell fans would have happily kept him, maybe lost a bit of spark compared to before.
Shaughnessy: Good player, lots of experience, St Johnstone fans would have happily kept him, maybe lost a bit of spark compared to before.

:

Fraser: Good player, lots of experience, Ross County fans would have happily kept him, maybe lost a bit of spark compared to before.

The caveat being the Shaughnessy didn't go from the farmers direct to us.

I'm happy with all of these. It's the importance of the 'experience at this level' thing that you can't understate. Hearing County fans describing Fraser is almost exactly how we were describing McGinn when he left, and how McGinn was being described when he joined.

If Hodson came available on loan I'd still be interested as cover, but if we didn't sign any more defenders, I wouldn't be too disappointed or surprised.

Assuming Fraser signs, then we actually do have quite a bit of depth at the back in terms of players who can play multiple positions across the back four. Still got Flynn and Magennis to come back into the midfield - deliberately left them out as they won't be fit for a few months. I'm still unsure where Thor actually plays.

It's a minor point as I'd say you've called the starting line-up correctly, but I wonder if it will be more a 4-1-4-1 with Sheron sitting deep in front of the CBs, Foley and McGrath ahead of him, with it turning into 4-1-3-1-1 in attack with McGrath pushing forward to help Obika.

Yeah could definitely see that happening. Flexible formation I guess.

If we did go to that 4-1-4-1, I think cautious Jim might put MacPherson in instead of McGrath, certainly in our second/third games of the season. It'd leave Obika isolated but that's not exactly a new story. Emphasis in that case on the wingers to support him.

It's a fair shout. I think McGrath is the more attacking out of him and MacPherson but that could be down to instructions given to them for each game rather than a natural instinct. My memory is failing me, but didn't McGrath play out left for a while with us or am I imagining that? If that's the case then maybe drop McGrath to the bench and bring him on to replace either MacPherson or Durmus.

It's going to be interesting to see how fit (and/or match fit) our players are considering the Covid pre-season shenanigans, so we'll need to see who ends up breathing out their arse come 60 or 70 mins.

Also said he's not good enough at this level. Despite playing over 200 times for them.

Not one person had said that.  Nobody thinks he’s shite.  That is you trying make yourself feel better.

Very few County fans would have kept him.  His form flew out the window a year or two back and never recovered.  Like at most teams, he was one of those seemingly undroppable players managers have.  A change in scenery is long overdue for both parties.  Great bloke.  Wish him nothing but the best.

In short: he’s somewhere in the middle of Martin Woods and Liam Boyce

Goodwin had a tendency to go straight 5-4-1 in those games. At Ibrox we nullified Rangers pretty well, at Parkhead just before the season ended we got absolutely scudded. Hopefully Sheron joining and Baird being available will mean that Foley can be left in centre mid the full season if Goodwin does revert to a back 5.
I would prefer to see a natural left back in to give us more attacking threat down the left, instead of a right sided player always looking to come inside. That was the issue with Hodson playing that side. For all his faults last season, Waters was able to throw in crosses first time when played down the line. A striker and a left back and I think we’d be in a good position for next season.

Yeah, I appreciate I'm maybe stretching the envelope with the first point. I think the second is really the thing I'm getting at. None of these players will left their clubs in disgrace, with the fanbase wishing them well.

I always chuckle when we sign a player from another team at this level, it seems to be the done thing to tell us how shite the player is. Over 200 games the boy Fraser has under his belt. Looks like a solid signing to me.

John Potter also played around 200 games for us and I doubt few folk would have complimentary things to say about him!

Don't really know much about Fraser (I presumably signed him on loan in Football Manager at some point) but his pedigree seems good. I'm guessing he left County in the hope of getting something in England and he's realised that isn't happening so is coming to us, which is fair enough. Bit annoying we've had to build pretty much an entirely new defence considering that was our strength last season, but can't be helped.

We really need to get the attack sorted now.

Correct. Decent signings on face value.

According to the journalist on Twitter it's only a one year deal which I expect is probably from his side and would certainly suggest coming to St Mirren wasn't the original plan.

If we are looking to fill the full back role, from a player who quit his club in hopes of getting something better but has found it hard due to Covid and is looking for a season's deal to tide himself over I would have preferred Stephen O'Donnell over Fraser. Wishful thinking though.

Considering we've had some right ropey full backs over the years, I can't imagine Fraser will in any way be the worst. Not even close.

Always impressed with his work rate. Not a bad signing if it comes off. I like the type of player Goodwin is brining in. Just a striker now. I suspect with the transfer window open till October we will see a few more arrive as time goes on

If Fraser signs then all our back four have been captains at previous clubs. Is this a record?

Anyway we won't be short of leadership when you include Foley, Flynn and Magennis who have all captained the team at some point.

There's always players, when they leave clubs fans aren't that worried. It's all about who you replace them with.

Take Calum Waters for example. I don't think anyone was that fussed when he left but had we replaced him with a Luke Conlon type player that wouldnt have been great.

Fraser was a regular for a team at a similar level to us, for several years and was offered a new deal. He's no world beater but I think he'll be more than an adequate signing and depending on who plays right back for Ross County this year their fans might start wishing he'd signed that deal.

Yeah, it's certainly a positive, at least in my mind that both Tait and Fraser were offered a contract and in the case of the former, that contract had been accepted. Not sure if Shaughnessy had been given offered new deal or not. I've no doubt he would have picked up a gig at another club if we hadn't snapped him up.
