Fuckit, I'd just started to convince myself he wasn't going.

I'd be reasonably comfortable with him going if it weren't for the apparent dearth of quality candidates to replace him. Most seem to have Neilson chalked up as number one, but if he falls through, I have no clue where we're turning after that.

I'm not that fussed on McIntyre, I think it's too soon for Goodwin, I don';t want any of the other usual names that get chucked about... so where does that leave us?

From what I've heard, Neilsen is nailed on for it, too soon for Goodwin at moment.

They were all telling us it was too soon for Jack Ross, that one went well, get Goody in as soon as Ross departs for Ipswich.

I'm just as interested in protecting Goodwin's legacy, TBH. His reputation with Saints fans survived being a key part of the 2014-15 debacle, because we could all see that there was far more going at the club at the time. However, plunging him in in our first season back in the top flight could see him being part of a Saints relegation for a second time if it doesn't go well.

I'd let him cut his teeth in the Championship with Alloa then see where we are in a season or two.

Fair point, for various reasons GLS and the board could be thinking along similar lines. It could well be a bit soon for Goodwin to make that step up, but the other names out their are just frightening.

Things can change very quickly but when JR does leave I trust Gordon Scott 100% to pick the right man again, wouldn't be surprised if JR gets an input on who the next manager should be as well.

Yeah I agree,  we all know he'll leave at some point but when you've had an 18 months like we've had and he leaves it will be a hard one to take,  alot of buddies will be hurting but the club has made massive strides on and off the park.

Not quite what you asked for but probably McGarvey ( http://www.stmirren.info/id406.html ) it's got season by season details so you could probably work it out.

Would you not like Robbie Nielsen Paisley boy with a St Mirren supporter father.

It wasn't too soon for Jack Ross. It was obvious when he was at Alloa that he was a class act and that he would go far. He even had a huge impact on us this season because we simply would not have been promoted without Kirkpatrick and Stewart. Goodwin is different. He works very hard and the players play for him so he clearly has something. He absolutely nailed it over the last couple of games over the season and the play-offs. However, his decision making and signing policy have been suspect at times. There is promise there, without doubt, but he isn't another Jack Ross. Jack was always going to be a great appointment for you. I suspect Goody would be a poor one and too much of a risk. At the moment at least.

He’s the best of the current crop of managers who are out of work.

But there are rumours that he’s heading back to a role at Hearts.

I didn't realise that automatically made him a good manager.

Some people seem to be obsessed with us signing "Paisley boys" or the like, which is the main reason why Paul Paton's name has been mentioned as a signing and Andy Murdoch's name was brought up almost before he'd even left Rangers.

Decisions on signings and appointments should be made based on their ability. I could not care less where someone is from or which team they or their family support. All that matters is they are a good player or manager.

I don't wish to be a contrarian, but I think he'll stay. Not certain, definitely not, but I've got a feeling if he was to go it would have been before now.

I am with @Stu here regarding Neilson, but I wouldn't be overly fussed if that's how this all ended up. Does anyone know what his signing policy was like at MK Dons? If Ross is snaffled up by Ipswich I'd be expecting at least a couple hundred thousand in compensation. At (lower) Premiership level that's worth 2 or 3 players.

I would have thought a major consideration would be continuity. We've had a particular style of play over the last 18 months that has served us well and has led to us recruiting particular types of players (and losing others). If JR goes (and takes Fowler with him), surely we want a manager that continues with that, perhaps only looking to strengthen us a little with a bit more physical presence throughout the spine of the team.

I'm sure Gordon Scott knows this and so the people he will be looking at are people that could fill the bill.  To my mind, that would rule out the likes of Hopkin (regardless of how well he has done this season - and he has) and Aitken and all the old codgers who get trotted out every time there is a vacancy. However, it may well include Goodwin (who is using some of JRs past and present players) and Neilson who JR  "interacted very closely with" (according to JR himself) at Hearts.

Just to add to that, the one person I would have really liked to manage us if JR had gone earlier (say to Dundee or Barnsley) is Stevie Clarke. That's not going to happen now, but of the current list of available managers, Robbie Neilson stands out a mile, in my view.

I want JR to stay, of course, but there is a part of me saying if JR is going to go, then it might be best for him to go now whilst Robbie Neilson is available.

100% agree Stu I never knew Neilson was a Paisley boy until last week thought he was Swedish no idea where that came from. At least he understands the passion for the club through his father growing up with it in the house hold always helps with a potential signing. I have tipped Neilson even before I knew he was a Paisley lad. I don't live in the town anymore but still love it and when asked always  reply I'm a Paisley buddie.

 Roland Nilson, the old Coventry player, possibly?!

This guy isn't Swedish, but we can get this playing on loop when Jack leaves
