BawWatchin
Cognitive Dissonance. The older you get, the more you lose the ability to be critical and question bullshit. You’ll all be those people one of these days.
Kejan
I would probably end up saying something I'd regret if pished around folk like that (I probably wouldn't as I am a haver, although I'm spoiled as I have quite a Yes heavy group of pals and family). Pal's dad is a Tory thought yet can't give a reason why we should leave the EU, but 'Brexit needs Dime' but hates what Sturgeon is doing to "his country'' yet thinks there's too many English people living in Scotland. Doesn't like Boris, Mogg etc yet always votes Conservative. I don't care which way you vote but if you can't give a reason (when brringing up politics at the same time ) or contradict yourself and try to wins others up about their political views it's hard to respect or take them seriously. When I asked pal's dad about if he felt British, he said not particularly and he'd like a Scottish passport. Yet doesn't want to leave the UK.

You can't sell capitalism to people who can't acquire capital. I really hope you’re correct. Sadly many of the 47+ (and particular 60+) Tory voters are people who have little or nothing to gain by voting Tory.
Benjamin_Nevis
Bit of a strange caveat to the final paragraph as you obviously think I am an arsehole. There was an bit in the Independent a couple of weeks back showing the GE results based upon age. Frightening and thoroughly depressing. Age has become the determining factor in voting. Kill off all the 45+ people and we would have a far more progressive society. I would love to think that things will change over the next 10 or 20 years but I am frightened by the prospect that most of those in their 30s and 40s will morph politically into their existing 50 and 60 year old counterparts in the years to come. Not especially. The last time I posted about pensioners and benefits you had a bit of a "moment" about it.
Carnoustie Young Guvnor
On 10/01/2020 at 08:25, Day of the Lords said: My parents are the same. Both well into their 70s, and believe everything the Daily Mail prints. The really depressing thing is that my old man used to be fairly socialist in outlook. He worked in manufacturing in the 80s, lost a few jobs as Thatcher's de-industrialisation closed company after company down, and times were pretty hard. Now that he's retired, he's transformed into an out and out right-wing Tory, and utterly seethes at all things SNP-related and will believe virtually anything printed about them. A shining example is prior to the 2014 Referendum a fake meme was doing the rounds on Facebook of John Swinney next to a pile of money, claiming this was Scotland's new currency "exposed". It was clearly total nonsense but he fell for it hook, line and sinker and was going mental. He also voted for Brexit, no surprise as he's been going on about "immigrants" for years, despite never having worked in a job or being in competition with them in any way when he had his own business. I've only recently managed to stop him using the word "coons" ffs. The cherry on top of the cake of his total minterness was when he spent a while trolling the local town's Facebook page with Tory shite, and ended with him posting a rant about folk should have to pay for the NHS as it's no longer sustainable in it's current form. He'd just had several months of potentially lifesaving treatment, btw. Someone called him out on his right-wing pish, so his response was to write to the Courier to complain about nationalists bullying him online My mum just goes along with whatever his views are. Are the pair of them get older I find it increasingly hard to have any respect for either of them. My bird's parent's aren't quite as bad, but both voted Tory, and for brexit. This after having their disabled son left in financial difficulty after having his PIP stopped and my partner having a serious brain injury and herself having a pretty traumatic time going through the assessment and appeal process. So yeah, old folk are largely arseholes (not ALL of them before old man Danger gets triggered) Wow. The last few replies have been amazing. I think we're witnessing genuinely a study in brainwashing and how effective propaganda can be. These people are voting against their own interests, it took me weeks to convince my mum not to vote Tory. I had to repeatedly explain to her they had stolen a chunk of her pension and she would be retired by now if they didn't do that, she still wavered.

I sent him Tory material about the cost of caring for the disabled alongside Nazi materials doing the same to try to show him that he's no longer defending the same country but he wasn't to be persuaded. Just a waiting game now really. When people say that I point out India was on our side too and immediately was granted independence upon the end of the war. And also that Poland etc were on our side, so should we be governed from Warsaw? Its pointless though. These people are brainwashed. We just need to outvote them.

My Dad died before the recent shit happened but my Mum who was just as "we all pulled together then" as he, switched to the SNP from Labour for the first time in the last election. Unfortunately the idiot boomers will live a lot longer.

vikingTON
I've no issue with 'gazumping' Johnson in a press release - or merely stating public information - but I don't think she's done too well today. BY lunchtime she was already sending a message to the public about banning public gatherings that was at odds with Westminster's line prior the Cobra meeting. That was daft IMO: she should have at least kept her case for the meeting itself and then announced any additional arrangements for Scotland in its aftermath. I'm far from a Britnat but there's no point in having the Scottish Government setting out contradictory and (IMO) specious advice on this issue. It's not going to reassure the public and does nothing for the credibility of either government.

vikingTON
Since when did it become the FM's job to announce that she was in favour of stopping public gatherings of more than 500 people a few hours before a meeting designed specifically to agree on a coordinated response? Sturgeon doesn't publicly state every single view she has going into inter-governmental meetings: it was a deliberate political act. All it did was sow public confusion - an outcome that should be reserved at all times for the clowncar outfit ruling from Westminster at the moment.

Hymlick Manouvre
Well done to the Queen of Scotland for stealing the limelight from the PM and making an absolute arse of herself. No mention of banning public gatherings but 'advising against'. No backbone as usual, why steal the tories thunder then do f**k all with it ? -
