Allotments

Recommended Posts

As I was cycling along the canal earlier (some odd people hanging around canals incidentally) I went through Linlithgow and passed an allotment.

Now that got my thinking, who the hell has an allotment?  What sort of things go on?  What are the demographics?  Why would you have one?

My only real recollections of them are the Trotters with their Peckham Spring and Arfur Fowler in Eastenders, don't know anyone that has had one.

Do you know anyone that has one or even better do you yourself have one.

Old folk, mostly for beer, porn, piece and quiet and the odd carrot.

Add a tub of hummus and it would be perfect.

Allotments are guys who have been married to the same batty old shrew for 30 years and want to spend as much time as possible forgetting she exists.

Where do I sign up for one?

I think there is a video on P&B in a "local characters" thread where a "local character" is asked what he has been up to and he gives a spiel about his allotment. The "character" in question is a wee bit like Harvey Price.

My maw's got one and she's in her 70s. Spends most of the year down there and, to be fair, on the few occasions I've been over, it's evidently a well loved organic vegetable and fruit garden.

Aside from that, I think the main attractions are the gin and big Rab. Hauns like shovels apparently...

I had a couple of old hippy veggie friends who took on allotments in their twenties. They probably got bored of it and let them go wild, or got busted for growing dope. They're handy though for people into gardening but are stuck in a flat.

So what you're saying here, reading between the lines, is that you once disposed of a body on the Law and had a big w**k on it.

In a tattie patch.

They've grown really well
