Polling: 2017 General Election, Council Elections and Independence

While the Lib Dems said they were in support of HS2 the candidate in this by-election was opposed

Quote

The Liberal Democrat candidate Ms Green is also against the rail project, however, is keen to stress that it will be the new planning reforms that MPs will be able to vote on in this parliamentary session.

She added: “For me, HS2 is a big no. If elected I will be a thorn in the side of this Government and HS2 contractors.

“There are genuine fears that tunnelling could damage the chalk streams, which provide drinking water to thousands of local people. I’m calling on these works to be halted, so that concerns about the water supply can be properly addressed.

“Sadly during this Parliament MPs will not have a vote on HS2, however there will be a chance to reject the Government’s new Planning Laws which would see more unwanted destruction to our countryside.

“Just like HS2, this Conservatives Government want to allow developers to build over our greenbelt with local residents powerless to stop them. After the pain from HS2 works, the new Planning Laws would be a devastating blow to our area.”

The Lib Dem’s won this by-election with a campaign against HS2 and house building.

Both obvious factors, but a 25% swing speaks to something more fundamental. Had these been the driving forces in voting, it wouldn't have been a Tory seat.

The current policies of the Conservatives and focus on "The Red Wall" have pissed off a lot of voters in their Southern heartlands. Planning reforms in particular are anaemia.

Trouble Labour has is that they are a dead duck in most these seats, have little support historically and probably think that the proposed planning reforms don't go far enough. Even if they weren't, there also aren't enough of these seats for them unless they win back their Brexity Northern seats as well.

This is possibly the first Covid impact on an election result. Whenever there is photos of the matches in London they are very middle class, middle England looking and there are loads of small business owners constantly complaining on social media.

The focus on Northern seats probably pissed some people off as well. The same thing happened with the north east seats turning against the SNP after 2015.

Anathema? Think an anti-Boris middle class Remainer protest vote is probably part of the equation given a lot of that northern England red wall focus revolves around working class Leavers and moves the Tories (only an issue in Ayrshire) away from their traditional class politics base onto more of a populist AfD/Trump type territory. This by-election will ultimately be about as meaningful long term as the Orpington by-election was in 1962 (i.e. not very).

She’s got a point.  If we don’t look after the bat population we’ll never manage to create our own British pandemic.  We’ll be forever dependent upon these inferior Chinese imports.

should post this every time the 'SNP killed Charles Kennedy' wagon trundles back into town

They are frauds, out and out frauds.

Kennedy and Campbell were simultaneously campaigning for Lossiemouth and Leuchars to remain open at the expense of the other.

Back in the 80s in Aberdeen there was a plan for a new bridge over the Don that the Lib Dems were simultaneously supporting and opposing in their local focus leaflets depending which side of the river they were targeted at. You almost have to admire their cynical opportunism.

Secession now, is it?  They'll use any word except independence.

Incidentally, 48% isn't bad at a time of national crisis when people are understandably nervous about the consequences of major events.

I’m trying to remember what the percentage in favour of ‘secession’ was when the last Referendum was called.  Pretty sure it was a bit below 48%.

I'll give you a chance to get onside with the rest of the daft wee tartan gonks who are ridiculing you elsewhere on the politics sub-forum.

'Secession' is fine but 'partition' is more apt - since we're the same nation state and have been since 1707.
