Goalkeepers

Probably a difficult one to answer this, but Raith Rovers have now started a match this season with five different goalkeepers - Kevin Cuthbert, Aaron Lennox, Connor Brennan, Ryan Stevenson and Pavol Penska.

Perhaps even more impressively, all have played in the league, so we don't even have the 'big team' excuse of playing different goalkeepers in different competitions.

Has this ever been the case across Scottish football, or even more generally?

I suppose some teams may have had a couple of different outfield players in goals for a few minutes, but really I'm looking for actual starting goalkeepers. Seems like five goalies from 27 matches must be unprecedented.

Most for Dundee I can think of is in 06/07:

Ludovic Roy, Scott Murray and Chad Harpur (trialist for a game and then joined Killie) and Callum Reidford (on loan from Rangers) and that was achieved in 4 consecutive games. Anyone with 4 different 'keepers in 4 games?

After that, Loy was mostly number one and I think Reidford went back to Rangers in January. Scott Murray did get some injuries though and we didn't have a back-up plan apart from Danny Griffin who was apparently the nominated substitute goalkeeper but luckily, Loy was fine.

We had a bit of a car crash on goalkeepers in the 06/07 season. I reckon 7 different keepers were stripped for 1st team action at some point in the season but only 4 actually played a league game, all of whom started at least once.

We started the season with Barry John Corr in goal having signed him from Stranraer but it all went pear shaped for him fairly quickly with a poor start, fans getting on his back and a crisis of confidence so he lost his place to the perenially injury prone Colin Scott. Scott got injured (again) and so rather than go back to Corr Ian McCall brought Craig Hinchcliffe in on loan for a month. He wanted to keep him longer but wasn't allowed to so back came Scott for a couple of games before injuring himself against Dundee in the Scottish Cup. He saw out the game but wasn't fit for the replay. In came Corr again for his redemption. Kept us in the game with a wonder save then saved two penalties in a shoot out so we won 4-3, then went tonto at the supporters for cheering him after booing him previously and had to be dragged away by his team-mates. Never played for the club again after that, though he did sit on the bench for the rest of the season. Instead Jamie MacDonald came in on loan from Hearts to be No 1 for the rest of the season.

Those were the only four on the pitch but with Scott injured more often than he was fit, youth keeper Ross Hyslop (15 at the time), former youth keeper Darren Martin, home on holiday from a US College scholarship, and goalkeeper coach David 'Speedy' Byers all had outings on the bench as sub keeper without being used.

Stranraer will be hard to beat here with our tragically desperate season of 1987/88. 16 points from 39 league matches (after winning the first 2) and a run of 28 league games without a win during which run we bizarrely produced a superb performance against Celtic and but for a missed penalty and an open goal miss should have beat them. At least it was a competitive season as we enjoyed a ding-dong battle with Berwick Rangers for bottom spot but we took the honour due to our inferior goal difference. Happy Days!

We had the joyful experience of being entertained by the exploits of 7 different starting goalkeepers. Take a bow...............

Tony Bryden, John Kapusciak, Ally McLean, Ian McFarlane, Martin McLafferty, Sandy McLean, Michael Graham

In 1998/99 Clyde had 5 different starting goalkeepers in the league. Gordon McIntyre, Dean Sexton and Robert Balfour started the first 3 games of the season and all picked up injuries. McIntyre played the 4th game then Balfour was back in for the next 2, then we signed Davie Wylie. He started all bar one of the remaining games - he (and McIntyre) got stuck in a traffic jam so centre-half Ian Spittal started a game in goals, before Wylie arrived and came on at half time.

In 2011/12 we had 5 different starting goalkeepers but only 4 in the league. Filip Mentel was on loan from Dundee United but wasn't allowed to play in Scottish or League Cup ties. He started the first 11 league games before injuring his cruciate ligament. JC Hutchison, who started the cup games, left the club a couple of weeks before Mentel's injury, so Alan Combe was drafted in as a trialist for one game. We then signed David Crawford who started the next 12, then Nick Feely on loan from Celtic who started the final 12.
