Anyone have a Sony a6000? I'm looking at upgrading. From what I've read about the camera it's a pretty good camera for the price, but I'd be stuck with the Kit Lens for a while until I get a bit more money together.

This is something I've been wanting to get into for a wee while and after scoping about the internet, I'm probably more lost than I was to begin with.

What are the realistic costs for a beginner? I'd initially be looking at landscape shots. I'm happy for the kit to be secondhand as well so eBay etc. is an option.

How much did you benefit from classes you took it is there a lot you can learn via YouTube?

I'll probably have more questions but for now I'm not sure.

Really depends on your budget ginge123 but you can certainly find good second hand options on Ebay and various Facebook seller pages for photographers. You can pick up a decent second hand camera and lens combo for anything between £500 - £1000

Firstly decide what you want to photograph whether it be wildlife/sports (both require a relatively fast camera which tend to be cropped sensor) or landscapes/portraits which tend to be full frame. Loads of manufacturers to chose from but Nikon and Canon are the popular choice. I'm a Nikon shooter myself.

Learning wise you can take short beginner courses (my local college did run them) or go out with someone who has a bit of experience and ask lots of questions.

Youtube is great for tutorials and i can recommend a good few books to get you started. Takes a bit of time to get your head round it but if its something you enjoy you'll pick it up quick.

Just ask away. We're here to help.

Took a few pictures recently with the digital camera, got pissed right off with it. Aye sure it takes a great picture, eventually after doing it's shit to stabilise and focus, frustrating.

I am in the market for a decent digital camera "body" if you can do such a thing and then buy varying lenses at a later date. Having tried to capture some swallows in a field near me and they were flying like feet away from me anticipating the capture click to it actually rendering a pic through it's clever trickery I missed the shot probably by at least a second.

What I am looking for is the old fashioned method of using a view finder through the lens and then manually using the focus and zoom myself. I kid you not I am going up the wall because I used to do film photography as a hobby many moons ago and I find a manual zoom and focus through the lens against your eye brow a far superior way to take the best shot and stable at that. I hate holding the camera with two hands looking at a wee LCD view finder out in front of you because it's a terrible way to take a pic with your arms being unstable taking particular angles and waiting for the damn thing to focus, Arghhhhh.

What options are there for using a digital camera the exact same way as you would a film camera? All the bells and whistles are gratefully appreciated like 4K or 1080p, rapid fire mode taking many frames a second.

I'm sure there are cameras that suit my requirements, I'd just like to get some feedback from posters who may already have experience with cameras I am thinking of buying.

I take it its wildlife you want to specialise in?

The viewfinder you refer to is the most common option on most modern DSLRs with the LCD and added extra on most cameras if you wish to use it.

Reading your post it sounds like you had difficulty in auto focusing, but for birds in flight etc. manual focusing would not be an option i would use personally. Great for macro work, landscapes etc but not for fast moving subjects. You simply wouldn't have the time.  Once you get your head around the camera and its settings let the camera and lens do the work as that's its main purpose. Set up back button focusing and you are good to go.

Have a look at the Nikon D500. It's cropped sensor and shoots at 10 frames per second. It is a beast of a camera for sports and wildlife. TBH anything that shoots at 5 FPS upwards is good for action photography. I've got a D600 as a second body and its also good for action shots but more suited to landscapes etc as full frame.

Google good cameras for action/wildlife. Loads of info online but happy to help on here.

I'm just getting into photography now. I had a bridge camera to start me off (which ended up breaking and I got a full refund, a minor blessing). I've just purchased a proper DSLR, a Nikon D3400. Not had much of a chance to use it yet and am just getting started now. Aperture, ISO and shutter speed all means very little to me - who/what are the best YouTubers, websites, blogs etc I should be looking towards? Thanks!

Here's some snaps I got with the bridge camera, in the mean time.

This is a good starting place for the Nikon D3400

When I say I can zoom and focus in advance I already know where the subject will be within seconds and the camera will be set for a fast action picture. The camera I own is most probably best left in the year it was manufactured. 2005. The damn thing takes an age to do it auto focus shit, it just doesn't do it fast enough. :( Takes great pictures for it's age but I'm in the market for a digital camera that works exactly like a film camera with extra features and most important is when I click the button to take a picture, it takes the shot the moment the finger presses down.

Took these last week. Here is the oldest known site in Glasgow for human occupation in Pollok Country Park, it's a round fort thought to be iron age or earlier. It was still in use up until the Romans invaded Scotland because the archaeologists I spoke to 10 years ago had found Roman pottery shards inside the fort.

Damn I'll have to upload them singularly unedited as taken.

Great photos. How much did you pay for the trip?

Thanks.

£255 each. Second time we've been but weather was horrendous going out this time. Took nearly 5 hours.

Weather was great once we got there.

Wouldn't put me off going back though.:)

Great photos.  My other half is a grand-daughter of an evacuee, so St Kilda is on the bucket list.

That's impressive. You should get the family tree looked up if you've not done it already. Definitely recommend doing the trip.
