Now that Selkirk have left the Lowland League, find out what happens next...

It will be interesting to see how they get back to 16 clubs whether it will be re-election or promoting 2 EOSFL or eosfl and SOSFL champions if licenced

Of the four who are licensed only Threave and St Cuthbert are likely to have a chance of winning the SOSFL - not sure either would want to be promoted, and given last season's play-off result against Kelty they would be out of their depth in the LL.

This is the applicable rule:

Admission to the League

B4 Admission to Membership of the League will be by (a) written application until the maximum of sixteen (16) clubs is reached or (b) by promotion or relegation.

Applications
must be received in accordance with procedures published by the Board on the SFA and SLFL website at least three months before the closing date for applications. Applications will be considered by the Board of the League whose decision regarding admission is absolute and final.

Thereafter, unless a vacancy arises through resignation or expulsion of a Club from the League, admission will only be through relegation from the SPFL as detailed in Pyramid Play-Off Rules in appendix1 or promotion from either the East of Scotland Football League or South of ScotlandFootball League. A play-off match will take place between the champion clubs of The East of Scotland Football League and The South of Scotland Football League, if both clubs meet the required criteria, to replace the bottom club in The Scottish Lowland Football League. The bottom club will be relegated to the League which will have been decided by the Boards of the three leagues prior to the start of each season. If only one of the Champion Clubs meet the criteria they will be promoted automatically. If neither of the Champion Clubs meets the criteria there will be no promotion.

In order to maintain a membership of sixteen clubs, the following will apply if there is an inequality between clubs entering and leaving the league through promotion and relegation:

a) In the event that a club is promoted to, but no club is received from, the SPFL, applications for membership will be considered. Irrespective of any timescales for application set out in accordance with B4 above, the relegated club will be permitted to apply for re-admission providing such application is received within two days after notification of relegation from the Secretary. Such application for re-admission will be considered on a fair and equal basis with other applicant clubs

b) In the event that a club is relegated from, but no club promoted to, the SPFL the bottom club and, in the event that a club is promoted from the East of Scotland League or South of Scotland League, the second bottom club will be relegated to the League which will have been decided by the Boards of the three leagues prior to the start of each season.

Worth bearing in mind that if the HL champion goes up, and the team coming down goes into the LL, and there's a licensed champion of at least one of the EOS or SOS, then the teams that finish 14th and 15th will both be relegated. The SLFL decision that Club 15 is "the bottom club" means Club 14 would be the "second-bottom club". There would need to be applications for the 16th spot. HJ posted the whole Rule above, but this is the operative section:

Assuming no other team goes out of business, Selkirk will finish in 16th and bottom place. Teams have gone out the game, throughout history, at all levels of football and I can't think of an occasion where that wouldn't be the case.....unless anyone else can remember such a situation?

How can they finish 16th when they have resigned??

In a lot of leagues they leavery them bottom with zero games etc. The problem is because lowland league has 1 relegation place. When this scenario happened in ersjfa super league when Ballingry folded no extra relegation as the team in 15th went down whigh would have been case anyway and 3rd bottom were in relegation playoff

The Lowland League have already confirmed that the bottom club, now number 15, will get relegated with a possible second relegation spot if a LL area team get relegated from SPFL2 & a HL team get promoted. This is because there are now officially 15 teams in the league, with the regulations clearly mentioning the bottom (and possibly second bottom) club get relegated, positions are not mentioned.

There will be a vacancy however, meaning that the relegated club(s) can apply to be re-elected to the LL. I'd expect them to have a decent chance as the LL clubs won't want a club to be punished because of Selkirk's demise.

In theory there can even be 2 vacancies, but for that either Elgin or Peterhead have to finish bottom & lose the play-off against the LL champions. Not very likely imo.

I can see your point, but the LL rules don’t mention positions, only reference is bottom club.

Am I right in thinking 15th go down automatically as long as the tier 6 teams are licensed and the 'vacancy' scenario with teams applying only occurs if the team in 14th are set to be relegated (if promotion from/to SPFL gives LL and extra club)?

The way it reads to me 14th are no longer at risk as "Second Bottom" is only applied in order to balance the number of teams in the league at 16.

Licenced Tier 6 champion and HL Champion promoted with SPFL relegated into the Lowland League would leave the league at exactly 16.

I think the above is the only circumstance that would leave the league at 16, which means at least one vacancy.

...which was because they initially didn't have the full complement of 16 clubs and the potential bottom clubs were probably expecting to always get back in through application anyway until they did. Whitehill Welfare and co are probably kicking themselves right now for not putting in amendments and tidying up the language on that to sixteenth at the last AGM as the wording is clearly a holdover from previous seasons that they probably never expected to be applied in this way. Moral of the story is that you should always read your league's constitution carefully and pay close attention to what is happening at AGMs rather than wanting the meetings to be over as quick as possible.
