Selkirk FC thread

A sad day for the town of Selkirk and borders football in general.

Hopefully the ground can be preserved for future use as its a fair set-up.

One good thing is the LL can now move forward with a plan for the way ahead this season, hopeful of 2 promotion places being made available this season.

Worrying thing heed is there could be more clubs oot there, whilst the non league set up in Scotland is in transition, that in the next few seasons could be in same boat.

Well that’s two out, albeit in different ways I thought wouldn’t last, Hawick and Selkirk. The LL will change in the next few seasons, as will the EOS. Borders clubs seem to be at the forefront of the struggle in both leagues

It is never good to lose any club, and especially one with a long history like Selkirk.

Perhaps the club will reform as an amateur club next season (AFC Selkirk 2019) and enter the Border League, or apply to join the bottom tier of the EoSL ?

Taking a wider view, will Fort William regret its decision to retain membership of the Highland League, when a safer bet in the short/medium term, may have been to resign and rejoin the North Caledonian League, thereby retaining its SFA Membership and Licence  ?

I take it any results against Selkirk so far will be deemed as null and void?

Theres to be a meeting on the 3rd of Sept to decide what happens pointswise/goals for teams that played them.

Also promotion/relegation from eos/sos to be sorted too.

With Selkirk Vics already in town I think the Borders League is covered for town interest.

If there's any attempted revival it should probably be for the EoS and 'senior' football to replace what's been lost.

It would appear ,,,,,,,,,,,,

There is no promotion to be sorted out the rules cant change mid season surely !   its 1 up as it was at the start

The issue is are Selkirk deemed bottom and relegated or will that go top 15th place and an invite for application for the 16th spot if applicable as if no promotion from Lowland League up then there is only 1 spot available regardless :P

If Selkirk's record is expunged from the table so that there are only 15 teams then if the rule states that the bottom club in the table is the one that is subject to relegation it should apply to the fifteenth placed team, because Selkirk are no longer in the LL at that point. If they had phrased it the sixteenth placed team it would be a different story.

If next year the EoSFL is gonna be a Premier league then a regional split below would Vics have any interest in joining using Selkirk's old facilities?

This is what I was on aboot you'll lose 3 points and 8 goals bringing you back a bit. Don't worry we're doing our best to go back to the EOSFL.

If that is the case  the 2 teams who played Selkirk at home and incurred travelling/players expenses should be reimbursed by the League...i.e Gretna and Civil Service.

That's my reading of it too. It says;

"A play-off match will take place between the champion clubs of The East of Scotland Football League and The South of Scotland Football League, if both clubs meet the required criteria, to replace the bottom club in The Scottish Lowland Football League. The bottom club will be relegated to the League which will have been decided by the Boards of the three leagues prior to the start of each season."

If the league only has 15 clubs, then Club 15 is the bottom club and goes down.

However...

Membership of the league is to be 16, and any vacancies other than the one up, one down promotion and relegation are to be filled by application. Club 15 could apply to fill the vacancy created by Selkirk's resignation.

My guess would be that, if it happens, Club 15 would be re-admitted. That's perfectly within the rules.

The SLFL board have said that they'll make a statement after they meet on the 3rd September. They can't say that Club 15 will be re-admitted, and they can't say that a second club from EoS/SoS will be admitted either. They can't pre-judge potential applications. It'll be interesting to see what they say.

Of course, the HL champion going up and, say, Albion Rovers coming down would relegate the second-bottom club (ie Club 14), who would presumably apply for re-admission too.

Fun and games... unless you're Selkirk.

Can't see it. Selkirk Victoria have the best available players in the town and still play in the third tier of the Border Amateur League. The town isn't in the position to have a team playing at EoS level (never mind LL level).

Can think of Tommy Patterson and Lee Stephen who play at Gala FR that are Selkirk lads but anyone else with footballing ability and doesn't play for the Vics plays rugby. The rugby team are so good and so well run and respected in the town that lads get to a certain age and have to choose a sport - the majority go to rugby.

Clydebank had 7 or more full international players in the squad during the last season at Cappielow. Average 'home' attendance was just below 400 that season having dropped from 1900 during the final season at Kilbowie. Not quite the comparison you were looking for.

Factor in the ‘couple dozen’ was actually the result of a protest and its an even dafter statement.

It's a wider issue in the Borders due to fewer young sportsmen, exacerbated by the particular issues of rugby and parochialism.

We've seen Kelso, Duns and Selkirk fall out (through lack of players, lack of quality players, plus financial issues causing lack of players respectively): in each case the amateur club in the town isn't setting the heather alight.

More fundamentally senior non-league football was traditionally confined to the rural north and south plus Edinburgh. Strathclyde clubs joining LL and now mass movement of East Juniors to EOSL will therefore, naturally, lead to some dropping down tiers.
