The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal

Recommended Posts

Hello P&B.

Some of you will probably know who we are already, while others might not be aware of who we are and what exactly we do.

Regardless of your attitude towards the Tartan Army, we have earned a reputation over the years as one of the friendliest, most peaceable travelling football supporters in international football, with awards reflecting on this at Euro 92 and in 2001 after a world cup fixture in Belgium, yet it is also one of the most generous and this is shown through the hard efforts of a small group of volunteers called The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal who bring a ray of sunshine to those in need wherever Scotland play.

The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeals origins started in September 1999 in Sarajevo, which was still reeling from the aftermath of the civil war, when Scotland played a Euro 2000 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A group of fans had got talking to a UN translator, who told them the story about the plight of a local boy called Kemal Karic who was an orphan that had lost the lower part of his leg in a bomb explosion after being carried across a square in Sarajevo in 1992 by his mother to take shelter from the shelling.

After hearing this story, work set about to raise money to pay for a prosthetic limb for Kemal, and from that first sparked the idea that Scotland fans could help make a difference everywhere we go.

The first donation was made to a Lithuanian charity called Zagare Orphanage before a match in Vilnius in 2003, where a donation of £1000 and 100 backpacks filled with pencils, colouring books, sweets, cuddly toys and other small gifts were presented.

Since then not a single away game has been missed, with 60+ donations in a row made and over £100,000 handed over in donations - this has gone on to make differences for those who receive it from building a playground at a psycho-neuroglial hospital in Moldova, providing computer training for children suffering from cancer in Austria, medical care for a Special School of Arts for Children with Impaired Vision in Ukraine, and incubator units for premature babies in Croatia.

Funding these donations is done through the hard work of those running The Sunshine Appeal and the generosity of those who help us.

We sell merchandise such as badges, bucket hats and the very popular “Scotland Invented…..” t-shirts, which are now the “must have” items for any Scotland fan when drinking a beer pre match on Prague’s Old Town Square or Trafalgar Square in London

But it also comes down to the generosity of the Tartan Army. In recent years we have received large donations from various Tartan Army groups.

For those of us involved with The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal past and present, we have never shied away from a challenge, and through the dedicated work of our Steering Group, and the generosity of our supporters, we will be making another 60 donations and beyond.

Please feel free to read more about us on our website - http://www.tasunshineappeal.co.uk/ , and join in on our social media sites on Facebook and Twitter (@TASA1999) to keep up to date on our fundraising activities and news on where we are making a difference next.

And to keep all things above board, we are a fully registered Scottish Charity SC041455

Though a while to go yet, today we are pleased to announce who our donation at the Lithuania v Scotland and Slovenia v Scotland World Cup Qualifiers in September and October will be going towards.

Lithuania : Vilnius Social Club - Football School
www.vilniussocialclub.lt/en/naujienos/

From their website, here's a little background information on what they do, how they engage with and help children within the local community:

"We create for children and youth a different kind of space for their free time;
We use football as a way of teaching children and youth various social skills (like attending exercises regularly, being on time, learning to follow the rules, teamwork, managing conflict and competitive situations, being able to win and lose). Children attending "Vilnius Social Club" activities will become more sportive, coordinated, will have better social skills, be able to easily communicate and work in a team.

Working with young people on the street - it's a long-term program, which aims to establish a relationship of trust with socially excluded young people and provide them with full support in their environment. Working with young people on the street program is implemented by two street workers, who regularly (3 - 4 crosses over the week) is a gathering place for young people. The program is based on availability, mutual respect, meeting the needs of assistance and confidentiality."

If you didn't know, Lithuania is now a basketball hotspot and a lot of clubs who aren't basketball related, find it hard to get funding, so your money will make a massive difference to them.

Slovenia : Drustro Bravo
www.drustvo-bravo.si

Here's a little background information on what they do, how they engage with and help children/young people within the local community:

The main purpose of the association is to help children and young people (pupils, students) with specific learning difficulties by providing support to parents, teachers and counselors to:
• create optimal conditions for the education of children and adolescents with specific learning difficulties,
• organize and promote activities that allow optimal intellectual, emotional and social development of children and adolescents with specific learning difficulties,
• promote the development of instruments for checking abilities and skills and the development of therapeutic forms of work with children and adolescents with specific learning difficulties,
• help implement the statutory rights for specific learning difficulties.

We're sure you'll agree that the ‘Drustro Bravo’ and 'Vilnius Social Club' are worthy recipients, who perfectly fit with the Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal's aim of donating to organisations that are non-religious, non-governmental funded and who's aims are to bring a little sunshine to the everyday lives of children/young people, who've not had the best of starts in life.

Good Morning everyone - February already eh!

For this week's round up, we've got a bit of a mixed bag, so let's crack on:

WESTA Burns Night (Glasgow)
This Saturday, there is the WESTA - 'Nod to Burns' night, with tickets available either from the guys (and gals!) at WESTA or you can buy them from our online shop - its sure to be a cracking night with the funds being donated to the Sunshine Appeal, which we are grateful to WESTA for doing so

Survey Report
We asked you to help us shape our future actions by completing a short survey - which a lot of you did (thank you) and we promised we'd share the outcome of it.
Please see our note here and as we've said in the summary report, we will share our weekly posts to the 2 main TA pages (based on where you find your information from us) but will spread these out over a couple of days to minimise 'repeat fatigue'
https://www.facebook.com/notes/tartan-army-sunshine-appeal/tartan-army-sunshine-appeal-survey-report/748871715265290

Sunshine Appeal Gym Bag
We'd been asked about an item like this for quite a while, so as more and more of us have either 'broken' or lost our SSC bag, the reasons to go and get them made, began to mount up - so we've gone and got them done!
https://www.facebook.com/commerce/products/973845896048718/…

Please remember its through the selling of merchandise like this, that help to fund the donations that have been made, continuously, since 2003.

Thanks for your continued support

We have some truly fantastic and inspirational news to share this morning.

Last night the guys who are doing the Wembley to Hampden Bike Ride received a £250 donation and a shout out on twitter from current Scotland international Ikechi Anya :)

Beyond anything that any of us expected (we were hoping just for a retweet of the event on twitter).

Really fantastic gesture from a member of the current squad!

Good afternoon everyone, hope you're had a nice relaxing weekend!

Did you know that since the very first donation back in 2003, through the efforts of all who have supported and continue to support the Sunshine Appeal, over £100,000 has been gifted to bring a little sunshine, to the lives of children in the countries that Scotland have played - with not one game missed over this period!
That's a monumental effort from all Scotland fans and one that should never be underestimated

We are delighted to announce that the Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal will be making a £5,000 charitable donation in Holland, to coincide with the fantastic achievement of the Women's National Team qualifying for the 2017 Euro Finals.

This additional donation could only be made from the fantastic fundraising support we receive from the wider TA, particularly during the past 12 months.

We are aware that potentially a few hundred Scotland fans are planning on travelling to the tournament, and we'd like to hear your travel plans and matches you intend on attending, as we would love some of the travelling support to join us at the donation. Please complete this short survey, which will help us identify the most appropriate location and recipient, which we'll share in the outcome of in due course
